It's not a good model. CXs shut themselves off as soon as the ambient temperature hits 30 degrees. Your room might not go near that but on the heat of a heavy load, it will reach the temperature limit and shut itself off. It's also of dubious quality, with average ripple and voltage regulation at best.

If you like sudden hard restarts, sure. Don't believe me? Look at the review.

He means in terms of quality. The RM Series are 80+ Gold rated, versus the CX Series which are only Bronze rated, and that means they have better efficiency and should last longer. I'd even go with something like a Seasonic power supply, in fact.

Cheaping out on the PSU is probably the worst thing you can do when doing a build, as all your other components depend on it.

My current build :

Hurricane Mk.I

  • CPU - Intel Core i5-4690K @ 4.6 GHz ~ 1.25V
  • Cooling - Corsair H60 2013 Edition
  • Motherboard - Gigabyte Z97MX-Gaming 5 (mATX)
  • RAM - 16 GB DDR3-1600 Avexir Core Series (Red LEDs)
  • GPU - XFX Radeon R9 Fury X @ 1100/500 MHz -24 mV
  • Case - CoolerMaster MasterCase Pro 3
  • SSD - 256 GB ADATA SX900
  • HDD - 1 TB Seagate Barracuda 7200 RPM
  • PSU - Corsair RM750 (750W 80+ Gold)
  • Display - LG 34UM67-P Ultrawide (Freesync)
  • Keyboard - CM Storm Quickfire TK (Cherry MX Red) + CM Masterkeys Pro S RGB (Cherry MX Blue)
  • Mouse - Razer DeathAdder 2013
  • Audio - Sennheiser HD598 SE with detachable mic
  • OS - Windows 10 Home Edition
  • VR - Lenovo Explorer Windows Mixed Reality Headset
  • Laptop - ASUS K501LX with i7-5500U and GTX 950M

You're a single data point. I couldn't tell you how many times someone has posted about sudden restarts while gaming in this forum, and the issue ended up being the CX power supply.

The CX750 isn't as 'bad' as its lower capacity brothers. For OP's build, it's still a completely capable PSU.

I don't know. It's the one power supply that couldn't complete hot box tests over at JonnyGuru.

And you know about the video, right?

Don't take it at face value. It's pretty sensationalist. But just because someone was able to run their computer 24/7 on a CX750M doesn't mean they're reliable.

Sure, there are better options but the CX750M is basically a cut-down RM. It's different to its lower counterparts as it uses DC-DC conversion and thus, has better voltage regulation. Secondary caps aren't Japanese but are rated for 105C so it's not exactly poor.

As long as it's kept cool, it should be fine (coming from the Guru itself). OP's GTX 970 won't be pushing hard and I doubt the RX 480 will either (although it's hardly an upgrade IMO).

Actually, you might be talking about the new CXM power supplies. They have, like you've said, DC-DC regulation and overall a much better plaftorm than the oldies. They range from 450W and you can tell them apart from the bad ones because they have a grey sticker.

Honestly a good move from Corsair to step up the quality of their budget units and are on my recommended list for cheap. You can even get RM-style modular cables for them from cablemod. But, like in this case, there's the problem of two lines of PSUs being called the same and misunderstadings like these.

I do agree that a 970 / 480 wouldn't pull much power at all. You could do crossfire 480s on a 450W.

I'm not, I'm talking about the 'infamous' green CX750M.

The PSU is designed to run at 30C ambient so with a GTX 970 or GTX 1070, you'd be hardly pushing it with its active cooling.

It also has a DC-to-DC convertor to generate the 3.3V and 5V rails (hence, the better voltage stability than its lower wattage brothers) with secondary SAMXON 105C-rated capacitors.

It's a decent unit overall. Would I choose this over other PSUs in its price range? No, of course not. But the CX750M holds itself relatively well to the extent that the OP's rig doesn't need an immediate PSU upgrade - especially with the upcoming GPUs that require less amounts of power.
