Hey there,

I'm a 15 year old gamer who has been looking to get off his garbage laptop for a number of years now. I was just looking to get some feedback from some more seasoned / experienced builders, in case I missed something or could improve parts. My budget is around $1200, saved up for years. Current price of the machine is $1081.01.

https://pcpartpicker.com/user/Sweviket/saved/#view=nmZkcf - My build

For those too lazy to click the link, it includes:

CPU | Intel Core i5-6500 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor

CPU Cooler | Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler

Motherboard | Asus Z170-A ATX LGA1151 Motherboard

Memory Card | Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 Memory

Storage | Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive

Video Card | MSI GeForce GTX 970 4GB Twin Frozr V Video Card

Case |  DIYPC Solo-T1-R ATX Mid Tower Case

Optical Drive | Asus DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS DVD/CD Writer

Monitor | AOC G2460PF 24.0" 144Hz Monitor

Mouse (extra, non build related) | Razer DeathAdder Chroma Wired Optical Mouse

Any suggestions or comments on my build would be greatly appreciated! Currently I have another 60hz monitor that I will be using as a secondary monitor, and I already have a SteelSeries mousepad, Logitech G230 headset, and a CM Storm QuickFire that I plan to use as my mousepad, headset, and keyboard. Thank you for your time!

So, a few things. You'll need a power supply and an operating system if you don't already have them. Also, you won't need a CPU cooler if you're not overclocking and without an overclockable CPU, you can go with a cheaper motherboard. Here is the list I came up with:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i5-6500 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($194.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: Asus H170 PRO GAMING ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  ($104.99 @ Micro Center)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4-2133 Memory  ($28.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Intel 540s 480GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($142.99 @ NCIX US)
Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 970 4GB ACX 2.0+ Video Card  ($274.99 @ Newegg)
Case: Corsair 200R ATX Mid Tower Case  ($44.99 @ Newegg)
Power Supply: EVGA 500W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply  ($38.98 @ Newegg)
Optical Drive: Asus DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS DVD/CD Writer  ($16.88 @ OutletPC)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 Home OEM 64-bit  ($83.89 @ OutletPC)
Monitor: AOC G2460PF 24.0" 144Hz Monitor  ($209.99 @ Amazon)
Total: $1141.68
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

I went with the Corsair 200R since I've built in it before and know it's a good budget case. I dropped the RAM down to 8GB which should be plenty for now. Also, with the changes I made, it gave you enough budget to get an SSD which will help a lot with load time in games as well as everything else.

Edit: I also left out the Deathadder. Didn't know if you meant for that to stay in or not since you said it wasn't build related.

TYSM for your advice, it would not be good if I forgot to get a power supply heh... I'll go with all of your advice except I have easy and free access to any OS' that I need, but I was also wondering about your thoughts on windows 10 versus 8.1 / 7? I had a few troubles with Windows 8.1 and compatibility with CS:GO, and Windows 10 dropped my frames on multiple games by a lot, so I was initially going to go with Windows 7 due to my bad experiences, and since I had little problems with it whilst using my old laptop.

I know a fair amount of people who still prefer to use Windows 7. It's perfectly viable. I don't know why you dropped frames on Windows 10 unless it was just some weird bug but remember that Windows 10 will be getting more updates than the older operating systems. Just something to consider.

And yeah, don't worry. The first time I built a PC was long before the days of pcpartpicker and I totally forgot a hard drive. :| It happens.

Uh I just realized that motherboard price is from MicroCenter since I live near one (a lot of their parts can't be ordered via mail). Do you live near a MicroCenter?

Edit: The amazon price only like $7 off... oh well.

Hmm, good build but could use some changes to improve its value proposition and performance.

Motherboard: Z170 motherboards are made for overclocking. Since you are buying a locked CPU, switch to an H110 board. Here is a Micro-ATX motherboard recommendation: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/hMvZxr/gigabyte-motherboard-gah110ma

ATX Board: http://pcpartpicker.com/product/RrVBD3/gigabyte-motherboard-gah170d3h

RAM: Unless you are using this for video editing or some professional work, 8GB is fine. And Skylake CPUs support 2133MHz memory speeds at most. Recommendation: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/rk98TW/kingston-memory-hx421c14fb28

GPU: Switch to an R9 390 instead of the GTX 970. Slightly better DX11 performance, significantly better DX12 performance, and double the VRAM without any segmentation nonsense. Recommendation: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/P27CmG/sapphire-video-card-100382ntoc2l

PSU: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/2tckcf/xfx-power-supply-xfxts550w

The problem is that this is an nVidia product and scoring any nVidia product a "zero" is also highly predictive of the number of nVidia products the reviewer will receive for review in the future.

I wasn't wrong. It's extremely rare that I am. I provided sources as well. Different devs can disagree. Further, we now have confirmed discrepancy from Twitter about he use of the pre-release 1080 driver in AMD's demo despite the release 1080 driver having been out a week prior.

You apparently haven't seen his responses to questions on YouTube. He is very condescending and aggressive in his comments with which there is little justification. He acts totally different in his videos. I don't necessarily care for this content style and there is nothing really unique about him or his channel. His endless dick jokes and toilet humor are annoying as well.

Yes, I live close enough to one to get there easily, so I don't think this will be a problem :)
