Pfsense problems

I have installed the memstick version of Pfsense on my system:

Motherboard: SuperMicro X8SIL (Dual Intel® 82574L Gigabit Ethernet Controllers)

In Pfsense I can see the LAN ip address that the router has and the intel Ethernet ports seem to have been recognized.

When I plug the Ethernet cable from my desktop into the Pfsense system windows recognizes that it has been pluged in and tries to identify the network and fails.

I am unsure If I need to do something with my ip address on my desktop or what.

According to this guide for setting up a prebuilt Pfsense box you need to set the network connected computers ip to 192.168.1.x with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and leave the default gateway blank to allow automatic outbound NAT. I have tried this and my computer automatically deletes these settings upon closing the local area connection properties.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you.
