More channels = more speakers = better surround.

Each channel can go to a separate speaker, which is controlled individually. If you got 8 audio channels then you got 8 individual audio streams which can play different sounds.

Here is a picture of 7.1 audio (7 speakers and 1 subwoofer.

This kind of setup is not possible if you don't have 8 channel audio.

thanks for the fast replay.

in my experience usually i run in to lets say 2-4 speaker that connected straight to a receiver and from the receiver there is only one green cable that need to be connected to the Motherboard so i never saw a speaker that connected directly to the motherboard.

so my question now is, if its not bather to connect the speakers to the receiver?

If you only use one green cable from the reciever to the computer then you will not get surround sound. The green cable only carries two channels which means that you might have 4 speakers, but they will function as if you had two. Surround is when all speakers plays different sounds (so that you can separate things like in front of you to the right, and behind you on the right).
