Are bronze psu's likely to blow out more than gold rated psu's or does it just depend on the manufacturer that makes them? i'm considering getting either the EVGA G2 650W psu or the XFX 650W XXX edition  bronze (made by seasonic) but I'm not sure what would be a better option i'm not sure if I should lean towards the evga one because it's gold? Any thoughts

This is how PSUs are rated

Bronze just means power efficiancy though usually gold and up means high quality but bronze ones can still be great

In this scenario, get the G2. Just never use a PSU´s efficiency as a measure of it´s quality.

Yep, as said the rating is about efficiency and some basic features / protections but they are basic.

If you want to know about a certain PSU, read a review on that specific model as even between capacities there can be big differences in performance across some lines.

The G2 is a GREAT PSU but not required.. Though at the slight premium it commands over generally inferior units doesn't represent where it truely should sit in the market if compared to how similar quality units are priced

That said if budget is tight.. then you cut where you need but don't take too many risks (which your not) But you have to read about the differences and then decide if it's worth it to you.

Jonnyguru or techpowerup or similar do good PSU reviews.

No. The 80 Plus system rates efficiency, it's not directly a measure of "quality" per se. An 80 Plus Gold PSU is approximately 5% more efficient at load than an 80 Plus Bronze one. (Chart here)

In this case, the XFX model is a pretty good unit that has been well-loved for a long time, but it's just getting kind of old. The EVGA 650 G2 is a newer design with better efficiency and performance.

Even extremely expensive, high-end PSUs can fail or "blow out" if they have defects in the right places. It has nothing to do with the 80 Plus rating. We don't buy high-end PSUs because we believe they can never fail, we buy them because they usually have good warranties.

Go with the G2.

I personally never go for anything lower than Gold seeing as they are so cheap compared to a few years ago.

That doesn't mean bronze will blow up though.
