Upgrade from 980

true but some early benchmarks i saw said that the ti is faster

The 1070 is marginally better. It loses slightly in some games, but most of the time, it is a tiny bit better than the 980ti.

Also, as I said, you are doing surround, which alone makes the 1070 a better choice.

1x 1080 is very close to 2x 980 but the 980's still win by a few frames in most cases. however this is not the case if the game doesnt have good sli support. also i would recommend the 1080 because of its features and because you can sli that card later without much trouble as you would have with 3 980's

I would not upgrade at all. A 980 is by no means a weak card and hasn't lost its performance.
I think you would to better and wait for a 1080ti and purchase that when it drops instead.

If you intend to run surround, then definitely go for the 1080 rather than an SLI. Sell your 980 and buy a 1080 / 1070.

I think in the guru3d 1080 review they already had these 3 options compared in chart.

Find that and take a look at that and see which is superior.

CPU: Ryzen 2 2700@ 4.0Ghz    Mobo: Gigabyte X470 Gaming 7 Wifi    Cooler: EVGA CLC 240    GPU: GTX1080 FTW DT @ 2113Mhz   PSU: EVGA 750W P2

Case: Fractal Design Meshify C   Displays: 34" LG34UC79G, 24" Dell

Do NOT get 2 980ti if you intend on surround. Get 2x1070.

ok why?

Because Pascal has features that enhance surround, compared to Maxwell.

The only way this upgrade makes sense at all is with a very high budget.  You are already past the level of hardware where there exists a good value for money proposition.

2x 1070 is not viable as it is $750 (less what you can get for a 980) for what would be not even a clear upgrade in all cases.  The level of expenditure implied by your considering this upgrade path indicates you would outgrow the dual 1070s rapidly.

I would wait for a 980 price drop or get the 1080 if the enhanced surround (it compensates for the monitors being at different angles) is compelling to you.

Getting a higher res center (or all 3) monitor is also worth looking in to.

If your setup works.. use what works. Don't buy into hype.

I run triple 144hz monitors in surround with SLI 970 overclocked to 1575 / 8100 @ 1.275 volts and there is little I can't do. As appealing as it would be to sell my cards and jump on a 1080 to SLI in the future, I am content. So my question is, if you're content, why change?

SLI 1070 Setup for sale!!!
