What can cause this??

Well if you do memtest it should tell you if the memory has gone bad or not.  if it has the solution is probably to get new ram

Uh, I used to see something sort of similar on Ubuntu occasionally that was related to video drivers... and a friend who had a macbook with ram that was dying did something like that from time to time...
