So I've had my PC since 2011, when I bought the parts just before christmas and built them all up and pretended it was a "present from Santa" for the sake of my little brother.

Since then It's had some upgrades and now I'm getting to the point where I'm questioning, "has it reached it's limit?", "what do I need to upgrade?", "how much will it cost?".
So I decided maybe its time for a complete overhaul, but I thought I'd get some opinions before I did just that.

So below are the specs to my current PC, I want to know whether an overhaul is mostly necessary, and if so what Parts I should go for. (also It's Nvidia GPUs only please, sorry other GPU lovers).

PSU: Coolmaster 650W Power Supply

             http://www.cclonline.com/product/42158/PC-650AUBA-M/Power-Supplies/Powercool-650W-High-Efficiency-Modular-Power-Supply/PSU1188/

Motherboard: ASUS P8Z77-V PRO
             https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P8Z77V_PRO/

GPU: Giga-byte Nvidia Geforce 960

             http://www.cclonline.com/product/189763/GV-N960IXOC-4GD/Graphics-Cards/Gigabyte-GeForce-GTX-960-Overclocked-4GB-Graphics-Card-GDDR5-PCI-E-3-0-Dual-Link-DVI-I/Dual-Link-DVI-D/HDMI/DisplayPort/VGA3187/

CPU: Intel® Core™ i5-3570K Processor

             http://ark.intel.com/products/65520/Intel-Core-i5-3570K-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_80-GHz

RAM: Corsair 4gb x2

Storage: 500gb HDD (only gives me 465gb of the storage)

Case: I tried to google for the case and Couldn't find much seeing how it was the cheapest possible case at that time, but for those interested it's called "Trendsonic Vision vs04aa"

So that's all, if anymore information is need feel free to ask.

Still a incredibly capable PC.   If you don't already have a SSD for its boot and applications drive, buy one.  Other than that, you're really not going to get a lot out of buying new hardware at this time.

Bring up Task Manager in Windows sometime (or the "free" command if you run Linux).  If RAM used is consistently greater than 6-7gb, then think about buying another pair of RAM sticks.  2x4gb or 2x8gb.  DDR3.

I'm a bit confused about your power supply.  You said it's a "Coolmaster 650W", but you linked to something with a different name ("Powercool")

CPU is still great, 960 isnt that good and PSU needs replacing :)

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Why????  If the PSU works fine for the load that's on it, and hasn't broken anything, why is there any need to replace it?

Cause it's a cheap firecracker and upgrading a system on a cheap firecracker is the fastest way to end up in a topic "My PC is on fire, help!"

This is the first I've ever heard of that being the case with that particular PSU, and video card "upgrades" these days actually result in lower energy consumption than their predecessors typically.

The issue is not the power usage - it's heat. The 960 will output heat and the PSU might not cope. Not to mention OCing, which is a must for a crapy GPU like a 960, taxes it a LOT

Based on a few things I've seen I've added 2 new pieces of information, my storage and case.
although most of you are suggesting that currently everything is great, with the acceptance of a firecracker for a PSU, I'm still feeling as though it would be much less of a burden for me to save up and buy all new parts. I guess a good starting point for discussing what I will need is this, I'm thinking of saving up for a Geforce 1080, so the machine will need to be able to cope with this.

This confused me at first as well, at my personal guess I'd say "Powercool" was the brand or the label for that particular PSU, but the manufacturer is definitely Cool Master

The i5 is more than fine for a 1070-class card. 1080 will need a pretty beefy OC though.

That's sketchy as hell... awfully close to the well-known "Cooler Master" don't you think?

I'm guessing OC stands for Over clock and if that's the case I wouldnt know where to begin, I've never understood it and never wanted to risk it so I never placed much interest on it. As my case is very cheap it struggles to keep my PC cool unless I had the side panel off, the mesh over my front fan removed and I keep my window open.

What you need is a case with proper ventilation, a good, stable PSU and a CPU OC to make that Ivy i5 great again, preferably without building a wall around it.

I never actually noticed that myself, I'm going to be honest and tell you that most of the parts in the computer I didnt choose, it was my cousin that chose them as I had no clue what I was doing at the time, only thing I have done is add 1 more stick of RAM and replaced the GPU

Sounds Expensive, But that's why I'd prefer to get everything sorted out now so i can save up the needed money rather then it being too late.

I've had a friend who recommended that case once, I never did get time to look at it. measuring it up and comparing it to my current case its around the same height but much longer, this would stick very far out from my Desk, one problem with a new case is I just don't have any room in my room. That's also one of the reasons for overheating because it's often placed on, which I dreadfully regret, a carpet (with feet to keep it above the carpet.)

A good case can be put on carpet without an issue; all the fans pull from the front and exhaust out the back and top.  Just make sure you install the PSU to pull air from the case, and not from the carpet :P  And, get a good quality PSU since it will be inhaling hot air directly from the GPU in that situation.
