Windows Help!

Guest LEDInfinityHD

So I am planning on upgrading my cpu and motherboard later this summer. I know this is a silly question but is it ok just just connect my HDD to the new motherboard, boot off it and windows 10 be all good? I have heard that (because I upgraded free from Win7 to Win10) that the whole activation key is tied into hardware and if I change my motherboard that  windows will not work... Any help would be much appreciated! I believe I just need to create a usb boot drive and boot off that, install windows 10 again on my HDD and then contact microsoft to activate windows so i dont have to buy a new license correct?

If you plug the HDD strait away to the new setup it will be deactivated and you can then call to microsoft and tell that you upgraded your hardware and they activate it.

All OEM System Builder and OEM license of Windows are locked to your motherboard. Only Retail version of Windows are transferable.

If you had Windows 7 retail or 8, and you upgraded to Windows 10, you will need to re-upgrade to Windows 10 before July 29th, after you build your new system, as the free upgrade offer will end.

1 if you call Microsoft and talk to someone they can reset so it will activate on the new board

2 you can get a new key on a site like http://www.kinguin.net/ (I got my new Win10 pro key for less than $40 USD)

Thank you very much! I think I will try ringing microsoft first and if not then I will just buy a new OEM key :)
