Is it ok to make a test bench from timber and plywood? thanks

Correct, wood is not conductive. There are metal test benches too, of course. Most PC cases are metal. But the components are installed in a way that prevents any electrical shorts.

Something like plywood could have some static on surface. Thats not really issue when used in computing though. Since one doesn't rub it with cats or cloth all the time.
