I'm considering buying the Sager NP9870-S NOTEBOOK. Here's my question, which of the GPU options is more powerful? Dual Nvidia GeForce GTX 980M GPU with 8GB GDDR5 Video Memory in SLI Mode or Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 GPU with 8GB GDDR5 Video Memory? Basically two laptop quality GPU vs single  desktop GPU.

There are some points where the dual 980Ms would perform poorer than the desktop 980, due to SLI scaling issues, but other than that, usually the 980Ms SLI config would yield higher performance.

But if you are already spending so much money, why not build a desktop? For the amount spent on this laptop, a desktop equivalent would perform much much better than a laptop.

I'm in college and need a heavy workload laptop that will already  cost around $1,500-$2,000. Given tight living quarters and my need for mobility it's just easier to buy a laptop that can do both instead of two separate systems.

But a 10 pound laptop ain't mobile, have you thought of that?

Something like this should do the same for you

The laptop I would recommend all day. Slim and light enough for you to carry around, and does not break your back 10 times a day. And it also won't die from thermals.
