Ok, hopefully this is the right section.

So I'm planning to build a new pc in the future, with the plan being to buy parts over time as they go on sale.

In the interim I wanted something to play around with (take apart, put back together, practice with command prompt/powershell/etc) so I'm getting a Compaq Presario SR5614F desktop with a monitor/mouse/keyboard for about 20 bucks.

Now, I understand that newer gpus are backwards compatible, but if I get the gpu for my new system could I temporarily install it in the Compaq? Will it give any sort of performance boost, will it even function?

I guess I figure that as long as I am waiting to fully assemble my new pc I might as well temporarily upgrade my old jalopy of a pc for the time being.

To be more specific, i'll be wanting to get a gtx 1070 level gpu.

PS. I Know that the gpu will be hampered by the system it's in, just need to know if it will work AT ALL.

Probably won't work with the 250 W PSU that the Presario has. If you upgrade the PSU, it should be fine.

i7 4790k | MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition | G.Skill Ripjaws X 16 GB | Samsung 850 EVO 500 GB | 2x Seagate Barracuda 2TB | MSI GTX 970 Twin Frozr V | Fractal Design R4 | EVGA 650W

A gaming PC for your budget: $800 - $1000 - $1500 - $1800 - $2600 - $9001

as long as you get a proper PSU,you should be fine.

any 80+ gold 650W+ PSU should work.

i'm guessing the board in that presario has an older gen PCIe slot,so you won't get full performance from the 1070,and the AM platform (AM1-AM3+) was solely designed for low-cost builds. obviously you'll get bottlenecks like you mentioned but it certainly would be better than integrated graphics.

P.S. - it's in the right section lmao
