Hi everybody,

A bit of a background so you can understand what I am trying to achieve here.

I am currently running unRaid on my gaming rig (4790k, Asus Maximus V Gene, GTX 780Ti).

I have one Windows 10 virtual machine to run my games that I also use to stream to my Nvidia Shield TV.  The setup is awesome, no lag no drop of FPS.

I am going to upgrade my server in order to be able to run more than one VM, currently it is not possible, not enough core, and possibly 2 Gaming VM (I will have upgrade the GPU(s) later this year)

So of course I could get a 8 cores CPU from the latest Haswell or even with the new Broadwell-E I could spent a lot in a i7-6900K. Or I could learn from one of linus video and go for older generation Xeon E5 CPUs such as this one for example http://ark.intel.com/products/75790/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E5-2630-v2-15M-Cache-2_60-GHz, get 2 of those and spend less than the price of a last gen one.

Now here is my question, how low can I get in the frequency of these CPU before I bottleneck my GPU(s). Obviously the lower I can get, the less expensive it will be. Now I know Games uses a few thread only and benefit from high frequency, but this is not completely true now with DX12 and Vulkan.

So do you think I could go for 2 of these http://ark.intel.com/products/75789/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E5-2620-v2-15M-Cache-2_10-GHz and still run all lastest game without bottlenecking (?) my GPU?

Then I will have memory and motherboard compatibility issue to think about, but one thing at the time.

Thank you everybody.

maybe ask someone to downclock their 6700k to 3ghz to test for the Intel Xeon E5-2620 v4.

its 14nm up to 3ghz 16thread.

or go with a 6800k.

Well actually this is a very good idea thanks. I had my friend downclock his 4930K. (6 cores)

Result with Heaven | UNIGINE

4.0Ghz - 1874

3.0Ghz - 1830

2.5Ghz - 1812

2.0Ghz - 1730

No GPU bottleneck.

The E5-2630v2 could be a winner, the E5-2620 could do it I as well, just a bit afraid of how long it would keep up.
