MOBO: Asus H81M-PLUS

CPU: I3 4170

RAM: 8GB

PSU: 500W Corsair

GPU: R7 370 2GB(Not looking to upgrade this atm)

My PC just isnt performing how i`d like it. I want to upgrade my CPU mainly and maybe my motherboard as its not the best. I was thinking of maybe switching to AMD and a new motherboard and get the 8350 and OC it.. OR get an I5 4690k. Thoughts? I mainly just use my pc for gaming but I want it to be somewhat future proof. Would I get around the same FPS with both options? Would it be better to go for an i7 instead?

Thanks for your time :)

I wouldn't go with the 8350 if you want "future proofing". I mean don't get me wrong, it's in my current pc mildly OCed at 4.5ghz, just not sure about what exactly you expect from future proofing.

Which games do you play and what is your budget ?

Most games really GTA5, Far cry, battlefield. Im not looking to spend too much as im saving for a holiday atm. I mean is it worth getting the i5 over the i7? or would it be better to go for the 8350?

Do you think it would be ok for say the next 2 years playing most games on ultra?

I think that ultra might be a bit high for some games like gta 5 that are gpu dependant.. I might be wrong tho. But for the next 2 years, going with that kind of a cpu used only for gaming is quite good.

I mean if it would manage most games on high/very high i`d be more than happy. Do you reckon i would be better just going for an i5 instead? I`d have to switch motherboard to go to AMD.

I think it would hold up alright for the next 1 or 2 years. At least i am planning on keeping my 8350 for at least another year. Running triple A title games on ultra will mostly be dependent on you GPU. With having said that, the 8350 should not be a bottleneck in a system that tries to run games on ultra (1080p).

If that is the case, an I5 would do just fine, even better .. Go with the unlocked version, OC it and you'd be future proofed for some time, can't say how much tho, next gen games are going wild these year :D

What is your budget, do you have enough pretty pennies for a decent overclocking mobo as well?

I indeed like Intel much better than AMD. Low cost pc: i3. Gaming/multimedia PC: i5. High-end PC: i7. All on the same socket. That's why I like Intel way more.

And some of the best AMD CPUs are comparable to i5 CPUs. Still not enough performance from i5? Get an i7.

Both sides have strong CPUs, my 8350 falls somewhere between some pretty old i7s in cinebench. But then again the 8350 is pretty old too. I only have an older screenshot of when i was running at 4.4ghz, doubt that my current OC would make much of a difference. Would need to test it some time again. @alanp97 this also gives an idea of where the processor sits in comparison to some CPUs.

prob around 300 euro. Cant i OC on my current MOBO?

I am not familiar with that board so im not sure if you can OC easily on it. You would need to do some research. From what i've read, it seems like intel doesn't support overclocking on the H chipset, so it seems like it purely depends on the specific board.

@Pepi28 Would there really be much of a in the i5 4460 vs   i5 4960 vs the i5 4670K overclocked? Would it be worth spending the extra 50euro?

You will most likely not get more than 5fps improvement within games, that being with a pretty good overclock.

Personally, i would invest in the K version simply because overclocking is fun XD. But its up to you if the "possible" increase of 5fps is worth your money.

I wouldnt be too worried about getting an extra 5fps. Im thinking of the 4460.

Also if you want to OC the K version, you should think about thermals and a proper CPU cooler (as you are probably using the stock cooler on the 4170). It's also another investment.

still didn't get OP to reply as to why he needs an upgrade.......???

the 8350, I'm running one in a machine. you're making a mistake thinking getting that over an i5 or i7 or xeon would be a better idea. Intel is just quicker/snappier in every way.,....  even if they're both clocked the same.

The 8350 is hands down better some i5s and i7s even if they are clocked the same. This also goes to say that there are some better i5s and i7s obviously, once again even if they are clocked the same (as clock speed is not the only deifying factor).
