max memory supported and DIMMs

I have a gigabyte H55M-S2V motherboard, on the site it says it supports  8GB  of maximum memory. IT has 2 DIMMs. Dose this mean that in order to use a maximum of 8GB of memory I should use  2x4GB memory config. Is there a max memory limit per DIMM slot?

I bought a G.Skill RipjawsX 1600MHz 1x8GB stick for my system and it didn't work, the system didn't boot, it just kept restarting! will buying a 2x4GB kit solve my issue?

Max memory limits are just how much RAM it can utilize. You can put FAR more in, say, 2x32GB, but it will only be able to use 4GB from each. This is because of the wiring and components used.

 

RAM capacities are split between the DIMM slots, so only 4GB MAX per slot. You cant put 8GB in one and leave the other empty. You have to use a 2x4Gb kit for all 8GB, You could use less per stick, but WHY?

This could depend upon the particular board. You might need to put the single stick in a particular slot. Did you try both slots?

Or you could have a configuration issue in the BIOS. Try resetting the BIOS using the onboard jumper.

 

Getting 2x 4Gig should work, but reset the BIOS before you try it just to be sure everything is set properly.
