So, I want to upgrade my current rig. As it stands, my rig at the minute is a mixture of relatively old and relatively new hardware which in itself isn't bad; it's just not aesthetically pleasing.

Basically, I'm wanting to make some cosmetic changes to my PC without changing the functional components too drastically. All of this needs to be done on a relatively low budget, and by relatively I mean no more than £500 (~$700USD or ~$900CAD at time of writing). That may seem like allot of money at first glance, but given that exchange rates are what they are, and that prices for components in the UK are ludicrously for pretty much every PC component on the market at the moment, it soon becomes fairly realistic. it also becomes more reasonable when you consider what I am aiming to upgrade as well, but more on that later. I really don't want to be spending more than the original budget, but I may be able to stretch a little further if I find myself with some spare dosh at the end of the month.

Enough about money though, onto the actual build!

I have quite allot of ideas when it comes to parts, but I would appreciate any tips or recommendation on products that may be better suited/more cost effective/better looking etc etc etc. The main premise of the build is to keep it clean and simple, while still being nice to look at. I'd also like to make the build as quiet as possible while still being fairly capable of keeping cool. Below is a list of components with ideas that I have in mind. As I have said before, feel free to put forward any ideas you might have which may be a better option.

Case - Corsair Carbide 400C

Power Supply - Corsair RM750x

Sleeved Cables - CableMod Power Supply Premium Cable Kit for Corsair C-Series, RMi and RMx PSUs, Red

RAM - 16GB (2x8GB) Corsair Vengeance Pro DDR3, Red

CPU Cooler - Corsair H100i V2 w/ Twin pack of Corsair SP120 PWM Quiet edition

Case Fans - 1x Corsair AF120 Quiet Edition

                     2x Corsair AF140 Quiet Edition

This is all mainly cosmetic, but not all of it is based on its looks. I need a new CPU cooler as I am using the stock Intel heat sink at the moment, which is ugly and poor at keeping my 4670k cool. The RAM is mainly for cosmetics also as I already have 16GB, albeit a very basic Samsung bare PCB stuff - I don't even know the actual name of it because it is something really obscure which was handed down to me by a friend when I built my current system.

So yea, thanks in advance for any input, will probably start ordering things next month when I actually have the spare time to build anything - have allot of college work to get through first!

Cheers! :D

I've actually not bought any of the components yet as I am thinking of starting a new build completely and selling my old build - I've already had someone who is interested in my old build and will be selling it to them in July!

I wanted to ask a question however, how did you like the rm750x? Are you happy with it, is it running well and quiet?

As I haven't actually had any of the new components to use yet I can't really pass comment on how good they are. I mean, the RM750x is a well reviewed product, but it doesn't seem to get an outstanding reviews. I guess when you are spending ~£100+ on a PSU you can expect it be of a high standard and anything on top of that is just what the manufacturer has added in to try and get you to spend more money? I don't really know.

Anyway, I will probably be starting a new thread soon - I'm pretty much decided on components and pricing, I just really need to save up and sell my old system now really :P

Cheers!

So what's your current hardware? Also why would you spend like 500 bucks for aesthetics? Why not just save your money and buy an entirely new rig at some point?

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

I've decided to get a whole new system now. It just makes more sense if I am gunna be changing most of the components in it anyway. Also, I have terrible OCD when it comes to things like this and l basically just want something I can show off aswell ^_^

My current specs are:

GPU - XFX DD 7870

CPU - Intel i5 4670K w/ stock heatsink

MOBO - MSI Z87 G45 Gaming

RAM - Cheap Samsung stuff that was given to me - know nothing more than that other than it being 8GB total capacity out of 2 sticks

PSU - 650w Coolermaster PSU - Also given to me. Don't know the exact model number without opening my case as I have an Air 540. Its also non-modular and the sleeving is terrible.

CASE - Ciorsair Carbide Air 540

HDD/SSD - 2tb Seagate Drive w/ samsung 840 EVO 250GB

I probably should have mentioned that I am also looking to downsize as I am limited for space in my room, and I am also looking to OC my CPU and upgrade my GPU in the near future. But now that I'm getting a completely new system, all of that is going to be factored into the budget.

On a side not - I'm looking to be gaming at 1440p and was wondering what you guys thought about the 1080 and 1070? I know none of them are available at the moment and that we literally know nothing of the 1070's performance, but I was thinking that the 1070 is still probably a better way to go just because of the price:performance perspective? I also realise that the AMD Polaris 10 and 11's are being revealed in a few days and will sit tight to see what they are like.

Will probably post my ideas for my new rig ideas in this forum post just because I am too lazy to create a whole new post and what not. If anyone could help me with ideas for that then I would appreciate that allot :D

Cheers!

CPU is fine for gaming.

Do you already have the 1440p display? as upgrading your display is going to end up being better than buying new components it seems you don't really need

Yeah I have a 1440p display - its what prompted me to start thinking about upgrading :P

As it stands at the minute, it looks like there are a bunch of new releases around the corner with the GTX cards and the AMD cards that I think it would probably be best to sit back and wait for them to hit the market. Also, the GTX 1080 seems massively over priced for what it is (£620 for Founders edition in the UK, which is roughly $900 US) and I was wondering if the 1070 is even worth it given that it is such a weaker chip in terms of disabled Cuda cores and what not that it seems that it would be a waste of time. We also haven't got a clue what it would be priced at in the UK given that the 1080 is priced way above what it should be (Yay VAT..) and it might not actually be any more cost effective. That's just my view point on it though, and I haven't really mentioned that AMD releases might drive down Nvidia prices, making them more reasonable. Who knows.

Or you could just grab a polaris 10 chip for like 200-300

the 1070 is only going to be about as fast as a 980ti, the 1080 FE at least is actually hardly faster if you OC your 980ti

That's very true. The way it stands at the minute, I'm just going to sit back and wait for something more substantial from AMD. Hopefully prices will become more competitive after that and it'd be a good time to snatch up a decent deal.

That'd be Vega with HBM2, whenever they make enough HBM2 to get a decent supply of cards out
