So there is a computer in the living room, since the computer is on most of the time when we are home i decided to run a plex server on it.

It has Windows 10 4 GB RAM and a A4-3300,

Seems like its not powerful enough when streaming a Bluray with transcoding, im not really into this kind of thing so this is why i ask you guys.

Also it runs slow playing some basic Facebook games, so it's time for a little upgrade. (Playing those "games" will be not at the same time as streaming/transcoding a movie)

Also with scanning the library it keeps between 40-50% lol.

The CPU has had a nice time and will probably go in some sort of Filestorage server since it keeps peeking with the most simple tasks.

I've had my eyes on the i3-6320, i have already used this processor in a build for other people but dont know how it is with Plex server running.

Anyone has some experience with this processor and running plex server?

Thanks in advance

That's even overkill for one Plex stream. Theoretically, that could do around three streams at 1080p. I prefer overkill in my builds, but if you wanted to scale it back to a Pentium G4400, that will easily do one 1080p stream and still have a good bit of headroom. You could probably get two out of it, but I haven't tried myself.

Overkill will do, meanwhile since the a4-3300 kinda sucks it runs now on a 2600k..

Later on i want to setup a server for multiple tasks probably also Plex server and that will be overkill too.

I'm a little confused. You now have it running on a 2600k instead of the a4-3300 you mentioned in your previous post? That's still a very good processor.

@minutellim

I meant since i tried it on the a4-3300 and it wont play smoothless,

i have it temporary running on my own PC which has a 2600k.

But since my PC required alot of power even when its idle i cant leave it running.

Then the facebook games problem came and decided to upgrade the a4-3300 PC.

With in mind that Plex could easly run even while doing some standard things like browsing.

As mentioned, the i3 will be fine.

Here is a guide on plex's website explaining how to choose a processor depending on what you're going to use it for

Quote

Very roughly speaking, for a single full-transcode of a video, the following PassMark scores are a good guideline for a requirement:

  • 1080p/10Mbps: 2000 PassMark
  • 720p/4Mbps: 1500 PassMark

The CPU Benchmark website is a good resource to see what sort of PassMark score a particular processor received.

Which means, with the i3 you mentioned, you'll get a cpu with a passmark of a bit more than 6000, which will definitely be enough.

The apu you're using now has a passmark of about 1500, which might explain why it's kind of slow for plex.

Btw, if you do not know how, getting a passmark for a cpu, google it's name and add passmark (like: a4-3300 passmark) and then use cpubenchmark's website.
