Hi,

I am about to build a computer for my studio. The aim is to be as silent as possible and to be able to run recording software.

What do you think about this build? My main concern is the power consumption.

Chassis           Streacom FC10 Chassis with HT4 Thermal Riser
Motherboard    Gigabyte GA-Z170X-UD5 TH - Thunderbolt needed for low latency audio interfaces
Processor        Intel i7-6700
Memory           G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 16GB
Storage1          Samsung 850 EVO-Series 500GB 2.5 - For system and software
Storage2          Samsung 850 EVO-Series 500GB 2.5 - Dedicated audio drive
PSU                Streacom Nano160 Fanless PSU

Thank you very much.

Best regards,

Chris

If you are only recording, you could cut the i7 down to an i5 or even an i3. This would save power and have less heat, meaning less noise. Also, no need for that much ram for the same reason. 8 GB should do. Something that would be good for a studio PC like this would be a sound card.

The sound card is external.

The reason I went for i7 with 16 GB ram was to have a bit more headroom for audio processing. While it is not the main point of this PC, it helps to have the option to run the sound through a few effects while recording or to do a rough mix before sending it for proper mixing.

Do you think the current setup is pushing the limit too much?

Thank you :)

the i5 and i7 have the same TDP

Never heard of that PSU maker though, proper fanless powersupplies are basically 1000W PSUs that just run very efficiently, they're also naturally on the expensive side

*The one you picked strange lol, I guess it's just really tiny? but I'm not sure if that's what you'd want to run in a production PC

And an ECO3 SSD should be cheaper while still offering pretty fast speeds

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

I am not entirely sure if the PSU would fit in the case. Is there a risk with running the power supply out of the case?

Thank you for your help.

I guess not, but why the super specialized case? I suppose it'll be on the smaller side, but going with a more full tower like the Define S will let you fit in the HR-22, a huge beast of a fanless cooler

What do you think about the Nofan CR-95C Copper IcePipe cooler? Provided that I do change the case, it looks like it could cool better than the HR-22 without a fan.

Thank you very much for your help!

The HR-22 can handle a higher TDP, naturally due to it's size. that one's not bad but under load, not sure how well it would perform.

i3-6300 has a TDP of 51w and the i7-6700 has a TDP of 65w, so going down to an i3 would lower temps

Ya, but you'd also lose a fair amount of performance

This avoton is an 8 core chip with only a 20W TDP, just clocked fairly low of course
