Hello everyone,

Is there any program that I can use to determine the average volume of music so I can determine how much to boost it? I was going to boost it in Premiere Pro or Audacity unless there are any better programs.

Also, if I add a CD to my iTunes library (is this fully legal?) and the bitrate is 320Kbps, is this the highest bitrate it can be? Another CD I added to iTunes had a variable bitrate (VBR) of around 290Kbps. Is this a problem with iTunes or is it what the CD actually is?

Thanks in advance

iTunes has volume leveling that you can give a shot before altering individual files.

If you keep the original copy of the CD, then yes, it is legal.

By default, iTunes uses VBR AAC when ripping a CD. There is nothing wrong with leaving it at the defaults. Most people have found that 256 AAC is very difficult to distinguish from 320 MP3s. Just keep in mind, these are lossy formats, so they are not an exact replica of your CD. Your ears may be able to distinguish the difference, or they may not, it's highly dependent on your equipment and hearing. Now, if you wish to stick to iTunes you could also change your settings under the import preferences and change it to Apple Lossless Encoder. Just remember, these are going to be much larger file sizes. Experiment, and do some A/B testing to see what fits your needs.
