Another physx to cpu or gpu question

Go to solution Solved by LabRat,

it was the 8800 series and above. when did the 580 come out? after that wasn't it? ( 580 is newer than the 8800 )

leave it on auto/try it on cpu/try it on gpu. it's up to you. it's just a software setting. nothing to plug in or unplug. no chance for failure of hardware. after choosing your settings don't forget to hit the save or apply button in the lower right hand corner.

when you swap hardware don't forget to turn off and unplug the pc first.

Hey I'm new here, and I'm pretty dumb with computers so I don't trust myself to play with settings due to the number of random deaths my past PCs have suffered.

So I have an Intel Xeon W3565 (4cores w/threading) @3.2GHz, with a Zotac GTX580 AMP! Edition 4GB gpu.

Is physx worth throwing onto my cpu, my gpu gets pretty hot so it must be struggling with something?

I ran some firestrike tests and found my physx score doesn't change whether I have a 580 or a 970(reference) in it too (I borrowed a friends to see if id get any benefits on an older mobo).

I'm also planning on upgrading to a 970 when the 1k series comes out, should I have it on the cpu or the gpu?

Or am I just an idiot rambling about nothing and fantasizing of a few extra frames?

i tried physx ( unreal tournament 3 physx maps ) on a 970 recently. either the maps aren't properly optimized for physx or nvidia cards still can't render it right without a discreet physx card. you can run all the artificial benchmarks you want. but the real world is the real world.

wouldn't it be nice if all the benchmarks we see, that the reviewers would also include the benchmarks for physx and give accurate numbers and unbiased facts regarding that performance.

as far as cpu/gpu............ it's supposed to run better on the gpu but in the settings panel it suggest "auto" for best performance. If you get the 970 you can try it alone or with the 580 as a dedicated physx card.

there's also another spot in the "general" nvidia control panel for physx. familiarize yourself with that.

Oh yeah I know benchmarks are mainly for bragging rights etc. I just thought that no increase despite a vastly superior gpu should prompt me to move physx to my cpu, or shouldn't it?

If I just switched it over would it break anything? I've done things on computers before (even as far as plugging in cd drives and hard drives) and have nothing work any more, then undo it and sometimes its fine.Probably bad luck :P

I'd like to have the 580 as a physx card but I read earlier on other forum posts that this feature was disabled by nvidia a while back.

The 580 came out in 2010/11 I think. This 580 is a weird zotac one with 4gb rather than 2gb vram, some sources say it came out last year, which is obviously false since I got this at the end of 2014. Could be a 2011 card?

I know to turn off between hardware changes haha, I'm not that bad ;)

Thanks for the help
