I have a msi ge60 2pe with a 860m. I recently benchmarked my machine to find out that the gpu was drastically under preforming compared to other 860m (average 7fps is heaven high preset, no tessellation), and while goofing around with msi afterburner to see if I could squeeze some extra performance, I realized my clock is normally at 135 and the ram is at 405. However while running some games (not all) the core will go up to 1015 and the memory will go up to 2500. Now this gpu should be running at 1025 and 5000. I have tried overclocking, adjusting the core clock does nothing, but I can get a extra 800 mhz out of the ram when it "turbos".

Anyone know why my GPU is doing this, and any way to get it to run at a constant speed all the time? As far as I know, its not thermal throttling, at its worst it will hit 69* with the overclock.

My CPU on the otherhand runs at a toasty 80-90*, wondering if I should get some AM thermalpaste to replace it with. (and I have tried blowing out dust buildup)

the core clock reported in msi afterburner or most utilities is half the actual speed (because DDR tech and what not)

so your memory is running at 5ghz :D

maybe you can try overclocking the core and vram, but as always, i dont recommend OC-ing laptops

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

2500 is the base, you have to double it to get the effective.

1025 is also the base clock - 1100 is only possible when the GPU is cool enough, check your temps

K, that makes sense (and makes me happier with my 800mhz OC memory) Any way to choose when the gpu turbos up so I can actualy use the full power of my gpu to play some games? Its really annoying to start a game and have it run at 15fps because my GPU is running at 135 and 405 (that and I would like to be able to properly benchmark).

Clean the laptop and don't OC it. Anything above 85*C results in the 860M throttling down to base

THe max temp with oc is 69 degrees, and I have cleaned it. The problem is that unless I am running certain games everything remains at a low clock. While better for battery life, it is unideal for gaming, and I have no clue what determines what causes the machine to decide whether it needs to go to its full speed. I cant even porperly stress test my gpus OC (though its been running space engineers for 4 hours straight, without any issue, so I am sure its fine) because it runs at the low speeds in heaven benchmark.

Maybe the game is just not demanding? The laptop is plugged into the wall, correct?

Im getting under 15fps, and it is using the dedicated gpu. And yes its plugged in.

Now that's an issue... Try installing an older driver like 361.91, see if it fixes it.

Uninstall the current driver using DDU.

If your CPU is running that hot it'll be throttling and even if your GPU is fine is has to slow down since the CPU is less effective. You need to improve those CPU temps before you see better performance.

I cant belive that an 860m is even able to start unigine while staying in the idle clock & mem speeds

Are you really 100% certain those games and unigine, where your nvidia card is staying at idle clocks, are not using your iGPU instead of the dedicated one?
