connection doesn't matter as I will be upgrade my entire mic setup.  For mounting, I just need to be able to use 1/4 tripod thread, whether built in or with a separate mount

Connection does matter because if you're looking for an off camera solution XLR is more ideal.  On camera, a mini jack might be better (depending on the camera).  Also connection matters because of how you want to interface with the recording device.

 

Since you are asking here I assume you want a mic for location sound in video, not for stuff like VOIP.

 

Go to B&H and look at all the shotgun mics the have listed, filter and sort by price.

For under $100 there is not much aroud

Maybe the rode videomic go but its about as basic as you can get
