So I've just built my first computer, its finally done. The build that I've been saving up and doing for a bit, its done. It took me about....7 hours to build it. (Slow asf, I know) My case was being a brat and I couldn't figure it out.

So I just installed windows and obviously the Ethernet Lan driver is install as I'm on this computer but is there anything I need to install to make sure my computer is working in optimal condition. If you could provide a thorough list of every driver I need in a fresh computer build, I would be indebted to you for all time. Another thing to note interestingly enough is that my wifi speeds on my on my old computer is faster than the Ethernet connection on my new one. I'm assuming that this is because I have basic windows drivers?? Is this correct, and if so who should I go to to remedy this.

ASrock z97 Extreme6

I7 4790k

Samsung 850

GTX 960

HDD

G,skill 8GB ram 4x2.

Could really use help with my first build, Thank you~

If you go to Start > Device Manager then all default drivers/things without dirvers will have a "yellow explanation mark" by them. Showing they need to be updated. You can then go to devices website and download the needed drivers.

If it is Windows 8.1/10 then you can "Right Click > Update driver > Search internet" and it should find the drivers for you. This should work on most drivers, if not you can just go to the devices website to download them.

Could you explain my crappy Ethernet speeds?

Did you download them manually off the website or are they still the Windows ones?

Yes I installed them and ran multiple tests. Everything is fine but the speeds are still poor. When I take the test it jumps up really high at like 60+ for a few seconds then goes down to thirty before dropping to 16-17 which is around my speed for Wifi. I don't understand

Hmmm, maybe packet loss?

Have you tried PingPlotter? It is a brilliant tool.

What am I looking at here?

Try and Ping Google servers (www.google.co.uk or 209.85.202.94). Then look for any packets loss.

@Seireitou Tricky situation. Can you try plugging your old computer into the same ethernet cable and is the situation the same?

If so then it has nothing to do with your new PC and will have something to do with your network

If your old computer is faster than your new one on the same ethernet cable then there we can start trying to eliminate what the issue is.

Get your drivers from the Vendor website:

@Seireitou Make sure you chose the right OS. ie. Windows 7/10 32Bit /64Bit.

There should only be 6/7 drivers to install.

Also do them in this order

1) Chipset

2) VGA (from NVidia site)

3) Audio

4) The rest

That last step isn't that important is it, because I already installed the audio one o..0

@Seireitou It's best practice. you may just get away with it.

But I have had issues in the past with not doing it in that order. Also did you try another PC on that same cable?

Not yet, I was currently resetting it as I'm giving it to my father. It just finished. Going to try now.

On my old computer the wifi speeds were 17.95 mps Dl and 2.25 Up

With ethernet it went down to 16.35Dl and about 2.50Up  Wdf is going on.... Since when is Ethernet slower than wifi. I also have to stress that the power is there. When the test starts it shoots up there 50+ easily then it doesn't maintain it. When on wifi it barely climbs to the 17 but it maintains it. I Hope this is enough information.
