Oh, then you're out of luck. The only other thing is to turn it off for a few hours and see if that does anything (doubt it will, but it may be an exception). If not, you may have to buy a host. However, they are fairly cheap.

So I run a minecraft server for a while on my home network and the server is getting pretty big with a steady 5 to 20 members online. But I got myself into trouble when I started banning misbehaving members. I got DDOSt a lot the past few days and it is really hurting the reputation of my server. Is there any way of protecting a home network against a DDOS? Thx for reading!

Without specialized equipment (or software but that is for another time) there is not a lot. The best thing you can do is get your self a DynamicDNS name you can get one free with www.no-ip.com then give that DNS name to trusted members. And whenever one of the scumbags hit, reset your router to get a different IP. (Most ISP's work this way, unless you have paid/requested for a static one?!). Just as long as the douches don't get your DynamicDNS name (which is easily possible, but they are probably 10 year old's and don't know)

Or pay for a host with DDOS protection.

Reset your router and modem your IP will change

Attacking the host is simply useless, because you can just update your IP address - every home IP address is dynamical (which means it changes automatically over time, or every time you reconnect your router).

Depending on how your ISP works just resetting the modem will not change your IP address, mine assigns them based on the MAC address and just resetting it will still give you the same address, so unless you disconnect it for an extended period of time where the DHCP lease timer expires and that address gets assigned to someone else you'll get the same one.

It depends on his ISP my old one didn't do that you had to pay extra, and the one I have now that is a standard feature.

Ahh i see ive used all the of the 3 big ISPs in Canada they all offer this as a standard feature i assumed it was a universal feature

Try a software firewall such as Jetico Personal Firewall note it does cause stress to the CPU due to the software firewall on your system is attempting to handle way more packets that your system can tolerate. Having a hardware router or firewall drop packets before they hit your computer should do the trick. Of course, there IS a limit even to dedicated routers or firewalls. So it really comes down to how much resources the attacker is willing to use to DDoS you. Besides that, there is really nothing else you can do to stop an attacker, besides coordinating with your ISP to block the incoming packets or reporting the matter to law enforcement.

As far as stopping the DDOS there isn't much you can do about it because even with a firewall your connection is still being hit, it's something that needs to be mitigated upstream on the ISP side which they might or might not even care about taking the time to do something about. Your best bet is to switch to an off-site provider who deals with hosting servers as they can provide far better protection.
