GTX960 Asus Strix Cooler on a longer card manufactured by Asus

LinusFan1111

I got a GTX 960 Asus LOL version (Only available in China. I will post a link and it will lead you to the page introducing the GPU) for a really good price. However, the cooling  literally sucks. It is super loud, and the idle is 37 degrees celcius and 86 degrees celcius about 80-90 percent load... I have tried to clean it and install a new thermal compund, but did not work. So, I want to install a GTX 960 strix cooler on it, and I can get it on TAOBAO, a chinese magical websites which sells literally EVERYTHING. It is about 10 us dollars. The PCB is 242mm and it is longer than the Strix cooler. Do any of you think it will work, if I get a strix cooler and install it on?? Thank you!

http://www.asus.com.cn/Graphics-Cards/GTX960DC2OC2GD5/  I am sorry it is in Chinese :(

I doubt it - each cooler has it's own mounting points and from the looks of it, the Strix coolers actually would perform worse. I'd say RMA the GPU (since it's either defective or a flawed design) and invest in a 380.

The R9 380 uses only 30W more than a 960 - literally no difference in the real world considering an average light bulmb uses 75-100W. As for your stuff, almost all applications have support for OpenCL and the 380 would definitely shine there as it has 75% more stream processors than the 960 CUDA cores

What do you mean RMA?

Return it - it's defective

Wait... is fan speed at 70% when it is 60 degrees celcius normal??? When I changed the fan curve, I saw a massive temp drop

Its pretty normal for manufacturers to use a "quiet" fan profile that lets things get a little bit hot. Not dangerously hot but warmer than most people like. Change it up and your temps might be OK

It won't  - MSI use custom boards

I bought all asus, and msi... I think there will not be a great difference between the Asus Strix pcb and the chinese asus gtx 960 pcb, so I will put my hope on asus cooler. And msi cooler only costed me 6 dollars so not a big deal.

Strix coolers are crap - pretty much anything Asus is crap at this point (am an Asus owner)

IT IS?!?!?

UGHHH

Maybe I should get an ARCTIC cooler

My vram is cooled by a small heatsink that is super low and does not interfere with any other components, so I think the coolers will work as long as the four wholes for the mounting screws are same in position.

Look at these miniature 80mm fans - will be hot an loud likely

Well, I think the heatsinks are more important though... Arent they?? And I saw the comparison between other gtx 960s and strix gtx 960, and it was the best card with the lowest temps?

Erm, the best 960s are the EVGA, MSI and Galax ones. The Asus one is down low near the Gigabyte ones.

Do remember to keep the VRMs cool - if they overheat the card will burn itself out quickly
