Recently I've noticed rapid 50% frame rate drops while playing newer games (Battleborn Beta and Rise of the Tomb Raider) at seemingly random times. I've narrowed down the issue to the GPU (a Gigabyte Windforce R9 280X) rapidly climbing to 97c and the the core clock being throttled as a result. Today I replaced the TIM with some Noctua NT-H1 and did not notice a difference. Idle temps have always sat at around 50c.

I've only noticed this issue over the last month or so. I've tried both current and rolled back drivers. All fans are spinning and I made a custom speed curve with Afterburner, the heat sink fins are clear. Case airflow should be fine as nothing else is suffering (plus the Aerocool DS 200 is a fairly ventilated case as it is).

What else could I try? I've had the card a year and haven't ever had to return one so I'd like to avoid that if at all possible.

Thanks!

If you already checked the TIMs there is not much else I can think of, how is the fan curve?

I set it to a fairly rapid ramp up, they're spinning 100% at 60c.

Ohh and it's still getting to 97, I would reccomend RMA'ing it. I'm running out of ideas of what causes this.

Alright, thanks guys. The card is a little over a year old at this point, is Gigabyte likely to even bother talking to me? The store I purchased it from (Centrecom for the Australian's out there) basically suggests talking to the manufacturer about the issue on their site.

Gigabyte's customer support is not exactly stellar but it's worth a shot

So I've re-redone the thermal paste and it's helped a lot. How much should I be putting on? I found the regular amount I'd apply to a CPU didn't spread out as far as to cover the whole mirror-finished die so I applied it in more of a x, almost from corner to corner and I'm getting better temps. FurMark on the 1920x1080, fifteen minute preset burn in still got me to 91C within two minutes though. The temperature over time is acting more like I'd expect, however FurMark temps have me worried. Unless I should expected such high temps using FurMark with only Windforce cooling?
