Ideal CPU temperature

ZTN

Hi, just built a new pc but i was wondering what the ideal CPU temperature was like i have an Intel i7 6700

It goes around 30/31 degrees celcius during idle 36-41 during light internet browsing but when i do any sort of gaming it shoots up to between 60-67 degrees for the first 15 minutes then gradually heats up to an average of 75 degrees on most games and today it hit nearly 84 degrees and then i was worried so i turned it off i was wondering if this is bad and what i could do to make it better

Keep it around 70*C max for the most part during gaming. What cooler are you using?

What's the cooler? And that's about what my 4790K does after a day of gaming, and it uses a Seidon 120V (albeit with a kind of bad TIM).

That actually seems about normal, its not far behind an EVO 212, which isn't far behind the Seidon 120V (in cooling performance that is).

You haven't mounted the cooler properly

Your temps are VERY high for a water block as well, his temps are in line with the intel stock cooler - he either has bad TIM application or a crappy mount.

1 extra inbuilt fan*

Yeah initially building it there was some problems with the fan connecting to the motherboard and one of the connectors was bent and my friend 'unbent' it and we kinda just used it

I already know its the TIM. Its only a stop gap until I get around to buying MX4. And with the same TIM and lighter mounting pressure I had an Arctic Freezer Pro 7 Rev 2.0 running as well as the Seidon with the same TIM, so its crap and only good for low pressure mounting.

Check if the fan is spinning - 84*C is way too high

When you fix it I can guarantee your temps will drop by a lot

I've had it for a week and that 84 degrees was a sort of record high not constant but usually it runs at 75 degrees after 15 minutes and yes the fan is running

That's absurdly high for such a cooler on a stock 6700. Remount it

I know they will, considering the power consumption of my 4790K at idle is the same as that of my i5 4440, and it idled at ambient with MX4 and Z9, I'm expecting my 4790K to idle at ambient, and run at around 70oC with the fan quiet (just an FYI, cooler master really sucks at choosing good fan motors, like Gigabyte).

If you mount it properly with decent thermal paste I'd expect maximum temps of 70*C and it usually being around 65*C - my i5 4590 never goes above 50*C anymore

If the Thermal paste is crap and there is no mounting pressure, you can point a jet turbine and it still won't make a difference. Get some decent paste and remount it
