hey guys, i was wondering what everyone thought about this idea. i sourced some intel xeon x5450 quad cores on ebay for about $20 each and i was thinking about throwing 2 of them in a compatible motherboard along with a gtx 750 ti (or something similar) and using that as a backup rig, temporary game server, or general workhorse whenever the challenge arises. what do you guys think about this. i know they are about 9 years old but i believe they could still be useful should my main rig ever break down or i simply need another computer for the task. thanks in advance for the feedback!!

no budget in mind really. nothing to crazy just thought an 8 core system would be nice to have when i need it. i sourced the cpus for $20 and i found a motherboard for 60 and im sure you could get an idea from the rest

$60? Hmm. Which motherboard did you look at?

Linus did do a video on this called something like budget eight core system a while back.

One issue is that if you want windows on it you will need a pro edition to support the dual cpus. And the cpus generally will perform like an i5 in multithreaded tasks, but they do lack in single threaded performance.
