Howdy all,

i5 4690K (4.0 Ghz OC)
Asrock Z97 Anniversary Edition Mobo
G.Skill 8GB 1600Mhz DDR3
Samsung Evo 850 500GB SSD
WD Black 750GB HDD 2.5"
EVGA GTX 960 SSC 4GB
CableMod 60cm RGB strip of LEDs - Removed to see if this was causing extra draw that would cause the noise

Corsair CX600M power supply (single SATA line with SSD, HDD and Cablemod lights)(single PCI-E cable for 960)

And the primary concern about this post is the power supply. I've noticed a weird ticking/skipping sound coming from my WD Black drive comparable to the noise an external HDD would make when removing from USB power. I've had it replaced through various RMA's and even gotten a new one so I'm going to rule out the drive being bad. Is it possible that either the SATA cable or power supply isn't functioning correctly and causing the noise? I've purchased a new SATA power cord from Corsair to replace the one I've got, doubtful it'll make a difference, but it's literally the cheapest option to test before plunking down $60+ for a new power supply.

Don't think I can go the warranty route with Corsair since I had to send in the proof of purchase in for a MIR :-\

You could borrow a spare PSU from friend to test out the theory...

Unfortunately I'm without anyone who has a spare power supply to test with. Aside from seeing how it works with the new cable when it arrives I'm out of options.

I guess I'm more so fishing for anyone who might have seen this before, so that I'm not stuck eating the cost of a new power supply or returning/restocking it.

Went out to best buy on lunch and picked up a CX750M (closest I could get) and installed it since they've got a 14 day return window.

Still makes the noise. Wishing it was a bit more easy to replicate the sound, so I could record it and see if anyone recognizes the noise...

**I've reset the BIOS to default and removed the OC...just in case**

Based on your description, I'm really doubtful that it's related to your PSU, especially after swapping it out with a different one.

Does the noise change when you put your system under load? So it sounds like a bad HDD?

Your thoughts are understandable, but after going through 3 other hard drives and even buying a new one to replace the one I originally had (which was a pain in the arse with WD) I've still got the problem happening with a new power supply. I was finally able to capture the sound here:
