I'm going to switch two CPUs between PCs. I will either keep the heatsinks both CPUs had or I will switch the heatsinks too. Anyways, I didn't word my last post too well and it's already probably not going to get many more replies, so I'll ask this question again...

Would I be fine if I didn't reapply thermal paste, but instead used the residue on the CPU and heatsink, for a few days to a week? I don't have thermal paste right now, which is an issue, but I can't do anything about it.

Thanks in advance.

It should be fine but you should try to reapply it asap if you see any change in temperatures from before.

In the practical sense, it should work (although you probably should refrain from periods of using the CPU 100% or benchmarks).

But in reality, a jumbo syringe tube of heatsink paste is what, $3 shipped from various Chinese suppliers?  Order some.  You don't need to buy those "expensive" (well not really) brands unless you're overclocking and trying to eke out every last bit of performance.

Need to switch the CPUs soon though, and shipping will take at least two days.
