By 'files', do you mean emails?

And what do you mean by safe? Like, no one will get hurt, but I assume that's not what you were worried about.

yes, i meant emails 
when i mean safe, i mean would it be more easily corrupted if emails are on external hdd

I don't have a lot of experience with transferring emails between computers (though apparently neither does anyone else)

The one time I tried it, I believe it was able to import all the emails correctly (from an HDD that had windows on it).

(Outlook has a tool to import emails and folders)

 

As far as corruption, your emails won't inherently be prone to corruption. Sure, an HDD can die, but that's unlikely, and usually there are signs beforehand (like strange noises)
