Gaming/Software Development Rig

FRN

Been researching about a rig I'm planning. Can anyone help me put together a PC that can play games at least near high setting and can handle multitasking for programming stuff. I'll be listing below the applications I'm planning to use in my new PC. My budget is around USD 800.

Gaming:

  • Dota 2
  • NBA 2K
  • Call of Duty
  • Far Cry

Work(?):

  • Eclipse IDE (Luna and/or Mars)
  • Java
  • Apache Tomcat
  • A virtual machine or two for different workspaces

With all those applications laid out, here is what I've come up so far:

CPU : Intel Core i3-6100 Skylake

GPU : MSI GTX 960 Gaming 2GB DDR5 128 bit

MoBo : MSI Z170 Gaming M3 S1150

RAM : GSkills Ripjaws V 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 2400 MHz

PSU : Aerocool Strike X 500w 80+ Bronze Certified Modular

Cooling : Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO or Thermaltake Water 3.0 Performer-C CPU Fan

Case: Aerocool GT-A Black

I did my research, and everything is compatible to each other. One thing I cannot decide is whether to go Air or Water on the cooling? And whether the i3-6100 is good choice for intensive multithreaded programming?

EDIT: I wanted to have a DDR4 with speeds up to 2400MHz, since I'll be needing them for development.

PS: First time rig builder, please excuse my parts-matching or lack thereof.

Thanks.

CPU: Intel Core i5-6600k 4.4GHz | Motherboard: Asus ROG STRIX Z270F Gaming | Cooler: Cryorig H7 | RAM: GSkill Ripjaws V 8GB 2x4 3200 MHz | GPU: MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X | PSU: Seasonic G-550w 80+ Gold Certified, Semi Modular | Storage: 250GB Samsung 850 EVO, 1TB Western Digital Caviar Blue | Case: NZXT S340 Elite (Black/Red) | Monitor: BenQ XL2411 144hz | Keyboard: Corsair STRAFE RGB Cherry MX Silent | Mouse: Corsair M65 Pro RGB

I'd like to make a Chemistry joke, but all the good ones ARGON. *nudgenudge *winkwink

You don't need at water cooler for a processor that cannot be overclocked. Save that money and upgrade the graphic card to a GTX 970 or R9 380.

I read somewhere that you can OC a non-K by updating the bios. I was hoping to know what's true or not. I chose the Z170 MoBo so that I can utilize the 2400MHz of the DDR4 RAM of my choice. I would be nice if you can recommend another MoBo.

I agree on the get a better CPU, an i5-6400 maybe? I'm tight on the USD 800 budget, otherwise my wife will kill me.

I think they stopped the OC non K CPU's. Intel wasn't happy about it so yeah. Also It was only for some boards.

Sorry, I forgot that to mention my location is the Philippines and I would like to buy parts locally. Some of those aren't even available in our market.

Dude, You can't overclock a non k skylake cpu now it's too late. Maybe if you downgrade BIOS version you can. And get the i5 if you can Core i5 processors have larger cache (on-board memory) to help the processor deal with repetitive tasks faster.

Actually, I already have a 1TB HDD so I'll just swap out the one you listed with a decent SSD. Im also gonna sell my old rig to get some money on it.

Is there any major differences between the R9 280 and MSI GTX 960? I would prefer the 960 over r9 280.

the r9 280 performs better in most games, and has an extra 1gb of vram(compared to the 960's 2gb), since its cheaper than the 960, go for the 280 instead.

Awesome! I got one more concern, the board specs says that it supports DDR4 2133 memory, but we have listed the  2400 mhz RAM. I understand that the ram will be downgraded to 2133 automatically, which is such a waste compared to the 2400. Can you recommend another board that can possibly support 2400 mhz, even though it wasn't on any site that I gave earlier? I'm gonna need every bit of the ram on this build knowing the applications that I will use.

the z170 boards are the only boards which are capable of supporting the full 2400mhz speed, which are much more expensive. don't think you should worry too much, it should still be speedy at 2133mhz.

So I've updated my build with this one.

MoBo MSI B150M PRO VDH - 4XDDR4 Skylake 5460
CPU Intel Core i5.6500 3.2 6mb up to 3.6Ghz Skylake 9780
GPU MSI R9 280 GAMING 3GB DDR5 384BIT 9900
PSU FSP RAIDER 550W 80+ SILVER POWER SUPPLY 2995
Case AEROCOOL GT-A BLK GAMING CASE 2800
Cooling Coolermaster Hyper 212 EVO 1900
Storage KINGSTON 120GB SSDNOW V300 SOLID STATE DRIVE 2150
RAM F4-2400C15D-16GVR 3850
    PHP 38,835

Just a little over my budget of PHP 37,000 (USD 800), mainly because I went for the i5-6500 this time. And I'd love to keep the red theme going.

Oh and, I'll be selling my old rig for about PHP 10-12,000 so I'll just be spending right about PHP26-28,000.

Looks good, but swap the v300 for something else, its got bad performance compared to other ssds, the sp550 from adata would be a better choice. Also don't need a 212 evo btw.
