2x4GB or 1x8GB ddr4

Alright I'm getting a h170 64G MOBO and an I5 6500. Should i get a 2x4 or a 1x8?

1x8.  So when you find another $35 in spare change, you can pop another DIMM in and still have room for further upgrades.

if your motherboard supports 4 dimms

go with 2x4gb for dual channel bandwidth

if you board only supports 2 dimms, then 1x8gb `-`

I'd go for 1x8 no matter what. Higher potential upgrade capacity.

do you need 32 gb?

2x4gb will allow up to 24gb ram

 

i dont know what are you going to do with 16, or potentially 24gb ram, but its definitely enough for me

 

also, 1x8gb + 1x8gb might not even work together, ram compatibility is hard to confirm unless they come in the same kit

Why not use an identical stick? That should work, right?

ram compatibility is always iffy

sometimes even when you buy the same brand, same model, and same manufacturing batch, there's a chance it wont work together lol

 

thats why those kits exist anyway
