My hard drive is making noise. I know I can look for other people that have this problem, but my problems are always weird and seems like no one else has them.

I dusted my computer over the weekend, and then on Monday the noises started. At first I thought that it was nothing and was only a one time thing. It happened again today, 3 times!

This is a fairly new drive, as I bought it back in October when I built my system. Should I start to back up my files, and potentially buy an SSD?

I also recorded the noise it was making.

Make a backup as soon as possible! Be prepared to buy a new storage solution.

As far as I can tell, there's nothing that's obviously abnormal about your drive. I suspect that the noises might be from the regular vibrations a HDD makes against your case. Perhaps there isn't good vibration dampening material on the drive trays for your case, or the drive was installed incorrectly. Just to make sure, run CrystalDiskInfo and post the report on this thread so I can take a look at it.

Also - you should always be backing up your data when possible.

I actually couldn't underclock my 5 year old GPU to make it as slow as a next-gen console.

run some tests, check the SMART status etc.  Post results.

I can't run any tests at this moment because I am going to sleep. I can run the tests tomorrow afternoon and post the results

There it is, health is good, but the noise is still worrying.

Drive Scan.PNG

The reallocated sectors count and current pending sector counts' raw values are both at 0, so there should be nothing to worry about. Try readjusting the drive in your case or getting more padding to dampen the noise.

Hey there g12601,

My two cents on this: The raw values of the S.M.A.R.T. status indicate that the drive is in good condition and should be functioning properly. I would check if the drive is mounted properly and try moving it around in the case  avoiding any resonating that it may be doing with the case itself.

I would also run WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool and see if the drive passes both the quick and the extended tests.

If the noise is disturbing you I would contact our live support and see if the drive can be RMAed. A backup is a good idea right now. :)
