Thank you!

Does it need 2 ssds?

Would it be better to buy one larger one?

Stahp! You can get waaaayyyy better deals by buying used! Go on ebay and look for the dell poweredge r610. You can get tons of power for your budget. Since minecraft is ram heavy, you can even upgrade the ram for not very much.

Totally agree.

On eBay, you can get r610 or r710 for a very low price. I mean I got my 2 r710 for 112 CHF per server with 8GB Ram and then you can buy additional ECC Ram on eBay. But since the Minecraft server with about 10 Players won't need more than 8GB RAM you could go very cheap.

Maybe you can look at r/homelab or r/homeserver. Those are good communities all about servers.

If he wanted to, he could even get something like an r210. It only has 1 cpu, but it sure is cheap!

Yeah, it would definitely be cheaper than building it on your own.

Another thing to mention:

If you would consider buying a Server(Dell Poweredge, HP Proliant,...) you should keep in mind that they are loud and that they produce a lot of heat due to their power consumption. So you should prepare for a higher electricity bill.

WOW! Thank you so much for this link, I can make so much money off that website because I've been selling Dell 2950s without hard drives all day long for $300 each on Craigslist and have a handful of buyers who want me to call them when I have more for sale. :D Those R610s are expensive as hell though.

Personally, I'm glad to finally be getting rid of those power hungry monsters, they are so much more expensive to run compared to R610 it's depressing especially with a fraction of the performance (an extra $360 a year per server and they only support SATA II with SSDs and quad core CPUs).

I'm gonna be running one as a file server/plex server and run some linux VM's to screw around with. And the other will be an off site back up of the first one

Or a DL380 g6. All depends on the day. http://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-Proliant-DL380-G6-Server-2x2-66GHz-Quad-Core-X5550-48GB-P-410-2PS-2-Trays-/181984594472?hash=item2a5f208a28:g:QikAAOSw~OVWxhdw

Haha are they really that bad??

3 amps of power is pretty bad when some data centers charge up to $50 per amp, especially with how they perform compared to servers that only use 1 amp of power (Dell R610s, C1100s, CS-24s, and HP SE1101). And the DRAC5 is horrid to use, when they randomly stop working the only way to fix them is to have somebody pull the power from the server for about 30 seconds which clients hate and at $250/hour for remote hands it sucks paying $62 to fix a DRAC that's only ever used during emergencies.

See they will be used in a home environment by me myself and I and whoever I give my plex info to. How much would 1 tack on to a electric bill?

For my house (based on my electricity cost of $0.13341/kWh) it would cost me about $32.14 a month for each 2950 not including the added cost of cooling. This is based off a calculator that converted 3 amps at 110v to 330 watts (330 watts @ 730 hours = 240.9kWh). In comparison, an R610 uses roughly 1 amp of power so it would only cost a third of that ($10.71 a month). It's not insanely expensive but for $32 a month I can rent a much better server with a much better network and it's 100% silent and won't turn your closet/office/garage into a boiler room. :D And compared to my DS115j NAS that does everything I need it to at only $13.83 a year.

In my experience, the del r210-r710 series is actually VERY quiet. I keep an r220 on my desk and even my computer is louder! Whatever pwn fans dell uses, they work great!

I have (personally) found better deals on ebay because of the competition between sellers.

I just wanted to mention that. My servers can get loud if they are under load.

After reading your posts I looked around and am wondering is this good?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=2RC-001A-000S2&cm_re=proliant-_-2RC-001A-000S2-_-Product

I thought more about something like this: http://goo.gl/ROA0A1, but the HP Proliant would work too.

Then you can install ESX or another virtualizing software and then run some Linux VM for your MC Server
