Hello,

So I have been buying cheap laptops for two years now.. which might not seem like much but I wasted 900€ on shit laptops thus far, my first being HP G2 250 (500€) that lasted me a year before lagging and dying on me, second being Asus T200, which was working great for 3 months, than the battery died, now I can't open more than 3 tabs before my laptop crashes.

So I am done buying shit laptops, it's time to step into the mid tier. Now the problem with mid tier is that it is sevearely overpriced where I live, for example the T460 (THE because there is no configuration, you get a 3+3 cell, i5, 256gb SSD) is ~1400€, the XPS 13 (i5, 128gb ssd, 4gb of ram) is ~1450€.

I am a desktop guy so this is so confusing to me, for example, why do cheap laptops (ideapads, ...) come with graphics cards, and the "premium" ones with integrated chips?

So my question is, which laptop is the best for max 1400€

These are the two I've been looking at:

http://www.mlacom.si/dell-notebook-xps-13-i5/4gb/128gb-ssd/intel-hd-520/fhd/win10

http://www.mlacom.si/thinkpad-t460-i5-6200u-8/256-fhd-w10p

http://www.mlacom.si/thinkpad-t460s-i5-6200u-4/192-fhd-w10p

I am intrigued by them all but they come with such weird configurations, why is the thinkpad 3+3 cell instead of 3+6 cell so I would have 12hrs+ of battery life, I would buy it without a second thought.

I love the idea of owning a premium thinkpad, but I'm not sure if I need it, I will be using the laptop to;

-use microsoft office

-photoshop

-edit videos

-play stardew valley or minecraft or GTA San Andreas Multiplayer

I think the XPS would be a better choice because it comes in a simple form factor I could use in my bed to watch twitch and play GTA SA, also it comes with a USB type C port which my next phone will surely have.

But the Thinkpad series has usually great Linux support, which I also love fiddling with every now and than.

What do you think? Which one is better?

The thinkpads are built like tanks but for photo editing and video editing a dual core i5 is not that great.

Yes but no ram upgrade and a i5 is still well not that good for photo and video editing. A 4k screen on 13.3 inch you will need to scale things up.

The same i5 is in both the thinkpad and xps, the only difference between the two is.. well.. you tell me, because the internals are the same, I still think the thinkpads are better built, people keep telling me that, but nobody has yet told me how.

And I found out it's a 1080p display, not a 4k (which I am glad about, I need that battery time yo')

Roll cage rubber edge on the out and in side of the roll cage. The plastic is made to break if you drop it from really high up so the impact will be more spread out. You can spill water on the keyboard and it will just run through some channels and out of the laptop. If something breaks which is really rare most things are really easy to replace. I have played frisbee with a 1st gen x1 carbon and it did not break. I have dropped my t420s from 8 meter hight and it works fine a little plastic corner fell off and well one of my friends dropped a xps 13 from 70cm height and it broke...

This is just some of the things if I had to tell everything I could write about 10 pages about how they are build.

I believe in the ruggedness of the device, my problem with your comment is; Can you stop physically abusing your devices?

I dropped my laptop once off my bed because I left my headphones in, I felt so bad I bought bluetooth headphones so that won't happen again.

I meant is there a reason other than the hard shell, I heard of security features that I half skimmed over..

A dude pushed me and my laptop fell out of my hands. That was the only time I dropped my laptop.
My friend drop his xps 13 from his desk because he tripped on the power cord.

EDIT.

If my laptop broke I would just make him pay for it, so that would have cost him 2750$ instead he just gave me 100$ because he felt bad for doing it and for the little corner that broke off. I did not want the 100$, but he insisted.

So where does the playing frisbee come it? Anyway,

Is this a decent setup? http://www.ok1.de/ThinkPads/Thinkpad-T460s-14/ThinkPad-T460s-20FAS05Q00::1083.html

The one problem I have is the battery life, out the box the XPS comes with 12+hr battery life, depending on the config this one comes with 6hrs to 12 hrs,

A friend of mine had a 1st gen. x1 carbon where the screen had a big crak in it and he got the new model from his company so he wanted to see if you could play frisbee with it, and we did.

Is the i7 necessary though? I'm not a really heavy photoshopper, and my videos that I edit are mostly for a youtube channel I make 1-2$/mo for, not a really heavy user.

The most work that I do is make essays for school (and shitpost on the internet) though I do enjoy editing video and photos but I'm not sure it would be worth a 500€ upgrade.

You can photoshop on a i5, just keep in mind that it is a dual core. The T460p has a quad core CPU, but some say that it throttles down.

This is my worst nightmare, but the thinkpad is so bulky, I would rather have something sleek.. I just wish I could have hands on with both devices to test them out, though there are way more people praising thinkpads and hating on dell.

Thinkpads are known for having the best keyboard you could ever want on a laptop. The 460s is not that bulky or the x1 carbon. If you want something sleek get the xps 13 if you want something you can upgrade the ram in and is very easy to fix if you some how break it get the t460/460s

I think I actually found the best combination http://www.ok1.de/ThinkPads/ThinkPad-T460p-14/ThinkPad-T460p-20FXS05500::1108.html

That's the thing, thus far I've had a laptop for a year because they break on me, I have to stop that because I wasted 800€ at this point, I think I NEED a thinkpad, because in every other case I will just ruin it again.

The T460s is not too far off from a MacBook Air 13 in terms of bulk. If that's too bulky for you, then you probably won't be happy with any regular Ultrabook.

I would also recommend the T460s. Unlike most other Ultrabooks, its U-series CPU has a higher TDP of 25W instead of 15W on both the i5 and i7 model. (raised by Lenovo through cTDP) While it doesn't do much for the i5, the i7 model benefits from roughly 20% increased performance, because it can continuously use the full turbo boost clock. The i5 will suffice for most tasks though and it is probably the more reasonable choice for you.

If you are looking for build quality and durability, the T460s is definitely the way to go. The T460s has a similar construction to the T440s in the video.

The T460p has a lower quality chassis and is much bulkier than the T460s, so I'd stay away from it. If you are concerned about performance, you can always go with the i7 on the T460s. It won't match the Quad Core on the T460p but as I already mentioned, the increased TDP of the T460s does boost its performance considerably compared to regular 15W Ultrabooks.
