COMPUTER FOR GTA V

Hi there, I am planning on upgrading my current system, a dell OEM to be able to play GTA V , and maybe similar games down the line. My current PC has:

- i5-2400

- HD6450 (cries every time when tf2 at 720p, low settings = 30fps and major lag spikes, unable to play on pub servers) >:(:(

- 500gb hdd (don't need any more, maybe slightly larger ssd down the line)

- 4gb ram (will upgrade to 8gb)

- Lg W2253TQ monitor (1080p, 60Hz, plan to keep)

BUDGET - 250AUD ABSOLUTE MAX (including 4gb ram stick, case/psu if need be) - probs 200 aud for gpu

Questions:

1) An i5-2400 will be fine right?

2) What is the best GPU for the price range? ie.e. Best gpu for achieving close to 60fps not necessarily max settings IN GTA V (won't play anything more demanding)

3) PSU requirements for said GPU?

THANKS IN ADVANCE

PS. Before anyone asks, I don't need any peripherals: already sporting a g502, custom tkl mech keyboard,  good speakers

the 380 on it's own is at least 285AUD, which already exceeds my budget by quite a bit (250 is really my absolute absolute max)

Thanks anyway for the PSU advice, they look pretty solid

what is your current power supply? Dell puts very good quality units from Detla in their pre-builts, if the rated capacity is enough and it had the needed PCI-E power connectors then most likely you don't need to replace it.

I use a Dell 260s, which has (from what i saw online as i've never opened it up) 250W PSU

Just wondering, would an R7 370 do the job (4gb model)? If so, that's locked in I think as it seems to beat the GTX950 in most benchmarks and has double the RAM

The 950 performs a bit better than a 370 under DX11. in DX12 the 370 is faster

I have an r7 360 2gb model, it runs gta at 60fps with not lowest-possible settings. (i have fxaa, softest shadows, and some other settings at high) Vram is almost full though so get 4 gb of vram.

The 750 ti is roughly 30-35% weaker than the 370/950.

His budget is 250AUD. he can't fit a gtx 970/r7 370, in the budget since he needs ram and a new psu, and its already $7 over his budget, so don't give me any crap about how they are better, since he can't afford it.

He has an absolute bugdet of $250.

250w psu, so he needs to replace it to fit a gtx 950. That is $60-70 for a basic psu.

4gb of ram, not enough so he needs to get another stick for $27.

That leaves us with $163-153.

Do you see any gtx 950/r7 370 for that price? Cause i sure don't. All i see are gtx 750ti($169)and r7 360($152). The cheapest r7 370 is $205 while the 950 is $225. Does he look like he can fit that in his budget?

Even if he dropped the ram, he still wouldn't be able to fit it in his budget. 2nd hand is his only choice if he wants to fit something more than an r7 360/750ti.

ITT: GET A 980 TI AND 64GB RAM ITS TEH BETTER. FUCK THAT HE SPECIFIED A BUDGET.

In answer to your original question, let's reserve $30 for a single 4GB RAM stick. That leaves an absolute max of $220.

I would suggest getting an R7 370 for $215

Don't bother with the 4GB version. The card is a rebranded... I want to say R7 265 iirc. The point is it isn't powerful enough to be playing at high enough settings to get any benefit from more vram. Even 1440p doesn't need more than 3GB. 4GB is needed for 4K textures, which again you won't be doing with this card.

Edit: I was correct. It's a second-time rebranded HD 7850, aka R7 265

He needs a PSU since 250W is not enough for anything

That is not true. VRAM usage is in no way connected to the core potential. I'd suggest you go read our very thorough guide in the GPU section

I have done, and I have already commented on the amount of misinformation, and misapprehension in that thread. I'm afraid for a novice wanting to learn about how technology works, LTT is a dreadful place to start looking. This card will be playing at 1080p, probably medium presets. Forcing 4K textures on everything will make fuck all difference, you won't be doing excessive antialiasing, and contrary to what you say as you increase intensive tasks you do see increased vram usage with it. So there is no point.

No, I look at data and form opinions based on facts and evidence. And if you were to do any amount of research yourself you would see that there are only a handful of cases in which it makes any difference on the 380, let alone the 370. It makes hardly any difference on the 960 -- the 2GB 380 out performs the 4GB 960 most of the time. And then moving up to the 290X/390X. If you set the clockspeed of each to be the same, the two cards perform identically in every game, in every resolution, even when you install things like "6GB texture packs".

The reason is that you don't need to be accessing all of that data at the same time all of the time. If you are seeing 6GB usage on the 390X and 4GB usage on the 290X but not seeing a performance difference, it just means that while the 390X is storing more data at once, the 290X is swapping data in and out from vram as it needs. It would only become a problem if the memory bandwidth were insufficient to do this quickly enough for the time in which the large amount of data needed to be accessed (which is where AMD's justification of 4GB of HBM on the Fury/X/Nano comes from). Unfortunately for AMD's marketing division, as cool as HBM and any new technology like this is, memory bandwidth is pretty much a non-issue with GDDR5 currently.

I think the 280x is a little bit cheaper than the r9 380, its faster but only has 3gb vram as opposed to 4 on the 380
