So I was all set on getting an AX860i for my next build (prolly ordering parts on sat) and then the RM come along with all of its silence optimized features and specially selected caps and stuff... Does this imply that the RM components are better than the AX? Silence is more important to me than efficiency, especially when it comes to coil whine. Or does the AX have even better components? Does the RM have any advantage over the AX in the silence department other than the fan not starting till 40% load as opposed to 20%ish?

The main difference s between the RM and AX is the cables and effenicy. The AX have black cables that are sleeved and the RM has cables that are flat. Also the AX is 80+ platinum and the RM only gold. And the 20% to 40% will make a difference because the fan won't power on for twice as long. Also you can set can curves for the AX860i so you can power the fan on at 40% aswell.

I'll be buying corsairs braided cables for either psu, so that part doesn't matter to me, and when the fan starts really doesn't matter much either cause of how low the rpm is.

So you're saying the AX has all the same silence optimized caps and such as the RM? How come they're not singing that from the roof tops about the AX but they are about the RM?

One other differnce is that you will be able monitor the PSU if you the the AXi series. You should check if the cables work with the RM or not. And also theb RM is cheaper.

Yeah, cables work according to the Corsair website. Price difference is not enough to make a difference to me. Monitoring thing will be fun for about 7 minute before the novelty wears off...

The only thing that matters to me between the 2 is which is better for silence, if both are equal than I'll get the AX just to have the higher end product.

Also, where are you getting your info from that they're the same other than cables and effieciency rating? I'd like to know this info is coming from a reputable source not just an educated guess

come one... the ax is a better psu.but this is marketing,we have psu`s with the fan spinning once a month for years...

lol, I know its marketing, hence the questions.  I want to know what the difference actually is, not what the marketing material says.

And like I said before, I'm more concerned about the "High-quality, low-noise capacitors and transformers" and if the RM ones are any better than the AX ones or if they're the same, or if the AX ones are even better from a noise stand point.
