PC power usage suddenly doubled

Hey guys,

recently my PC's idle power consumption simply doubled with no changes to anything (no driver updates or sim.). Before it was at 40-50W idle, now it is at 100W idle. what causes this?

Thanks in advance for any tips tricks and thoughts!

@Moonzy didn't find anything abnormal, cpu is according to task manager at 0-4% at 0,78Ghz

i tried the energy saving profile of win10, didn't change anything....

Your CPU and GPU clock speeds while idle?

how exactly did u measure system watts? lol

 

and when did this happen

was it like 40~50W yesterday and suddenly 100W today or it occured overtime?

probably just background apps

check your task manger

@Matthew_innes @Moonzy@Samfisher: just restarted the computer: When on the login screen, power usage is normal (40-50W), but as soon as everything is loaded, it is that high. I opened msconfig and checked hide windows services, there are only avira and nvidia which are starting services.

well... being on the desktop does run more task than being on the login screen, so that explains it lol

yeah but I achieved the 40-50W on the desktop until last week or so and i didn't install anything

probably some background softwares that arent registered on the task manager (like windows's own programs)

also, check if your gpu is stuck running at high clock speeds, that might be one of the issues

jep that's it, it is running at 1177MHz...  WHY???? (not a direct question to you but if you have a clue why pls give me a hint how i get the clock down...)

try installing the latest AMD driver if you're on AMD cards, or the 362.xx or the 361.xx drivers if you're using nvidia cards

 

it could be that something is using your gpu? i dunno

your gpu should down clock itself during idle

jep, just checked it: in other windows users it does downclock, but in my standard one not....

solved the issue, but it is very strange that this problem only occured in this particular winuser
