Remove Thermal Paste

Bergfinken

Hi!

Can I remove Thermal Paste using humid toilet paper? Will it damage my CPU?

Thanks :)

I personally would not. Just because of artifacts from it which can also be almost impossible to see. This could impact cooling if not all artifacts are gone.

Don't use anything that will fall apart or will leave residue. I'd suggest using isopropyl alcohol the higher the concentration the better but you can use lesser (70%) but it'll just take longer to dry. Use a coffee filter instead to wipe off grime.

TP should be fine. As long as it is not overly 'fluffy' stuff.

Using water on a CPU will not in itself cause any damage but accidents do happen and water in the socket may fry everything.

Preferably use alcohol as it will evaporate, at even low, room temperature

As long as you ensure the CPU is DRY before putting power to it (and reinserting it into the MoBo:preferably you would remove it from the socket before getting water any where near it), you should have no major problems.

TBH for the amount of doubt this has obviously engendered in you I would get a SMALL bottle of alcohol and (say) a coffee filter and use that

^ This is great advice. The coffee filter is seriously perfect for the job.

Yes, you could see temp differences as much as 30C if those artifacts are not removed.

30 C ? Are you insane? There wont be ANY difference at all, unless artifacts are 1cm by 1cm large lol.
