Hi all.

My PC has randomly been rebooting and I don't know why :(

Specs:

  • MSI Z87I GAMING AC motherboard
  • Intel i5 4690K
  • Asus Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 Strix
  • Samsung 500 GB 850 EVO SSD
  • G.Skill DDR3 PC1600 CL9 4GB Ram x 2
  • Corsair CX600M PSU
  • Windows 10

Behaviour:

  • It generally happens 1-3 minutes after I've turned it on. But not always.
  • If I let it idle it lessens the chance of reboot. Reboot usually occurs a minute after I launch a game.
  • If it survives the first few minutes it usually runs fine until I'm done with it, but still does occasionally reboot.

Some info that may rule out some problems:

  • Temperatures seem fine. Running stress tests gets max temps of 68°C CPU core and 67°C GPU core.
  • Doesn't seem linked to heavy CPU or GPU usage, or lack of RAM.
  • Updating all my hardware's firmware hasn't stopped the problem.
  • The computer hasn't been moved, so I doubt a connector has come loose.
  • Inside the case it's clean. No dust buildups.
  • Don't think it's due to electrical problems in my house. Electronics in the same room aren't affected and I have never had house power issues before.
  • The PC is only really used for gaming, so there is pretty much no third-party software on it other than Steam. Don't think it's due to buggy software or malware.

Any help would be very kindly appreciated.

Yeah was thinking it may be a PSU issue. Sadly I found out it wasn't a fantastic PSU after I purchased it. Was hoping it wouldn't cause any problems. Maybe not :/

It might be your PSU, how long have you had it? (just a thought)

It, and all the other components, are 10 months old.

Yeah the caps in your PSU are most likely worn out. Problem is you can't just run your CPU and GPU on separate rails (or swap them around) because you only have one +12v rail, so your only option is to swap out your PSU
