Connecting internal card reader

Go to solution Solved by LogicalDrm,

Nothing on that front panel reader would need extra power. Therefore there isn't power connector. All of them will get power from mobo by data connector.

I have a gigabyte z97x gaming 3 mobo and a evga nex 650 psu.(listed for the cables it comes with)

I have an internal card reader that has usb3.0 and usb2.0. However my mobo only seems to have one USB3.0 port taken up by the front panel on my case. So can I not connect the card reader without getting an expansion card with a usb3.0 port on? Also the card reader doesn't have a molex cable for power. It's a little black connection similar but not identical to a usb2 connection which I don't know where to plug in. Any help?

Additionally to make it worse. The instructions for the card reader show a molex connector as the power supply and it just says connect it...

Edit. Just realised the 'ac 97' cable is identical to the hd audio cable on the card reader. (Which is currently also being used by my case front panned)

I know I just looked and it is identical to that. There is also a hd audio cable on the card reader. But I can't connect it to the mobo because it is being used by my front panel aswell. But that cable says ac 97???

You dont have to plug in the audio from the card reader, just tuck the cable away, you can just use the USB 2.0 cable coming from the card reader but you'll only get 2,0 speeds.

Just taken it out to inspect. I only got it for the sd reader. However that runs on usb3.0 bandwidth so i'll need a usb3.0 bay for that. So I think I'll have to get an expansion card or something. Then there is a usb2 cable going to the 2 usb2 ports. And the only other cable is both the hd audio one and the ac 97 one. They're both identical. So does the ac97 one give the power? Because I can't plug it into the mobo because then my front panel headphone and mic. Ports won't be connected??

the HD Audio by its self will work, its just the quality of the audio, some motherboards only support AC97, that's why its included on your card reader

Thank you. So in order to connect an additional usb 3. Will I have to get some sort of expansion card or something with a 20 pin connector to plug the usb3 into? (For the card reader).

On those expansion cards can the 20 pin usb 3 connector be used for other things such as the card reader, or is it for the usb 3 ports that the card provides?

If extension card has internal connector, you can use it like connectors on mobo. They don't all have it.
