Basicly my friend built a brand new pc and it posts with out the GTX 970 in, the gpu does turn on when the system boots but the "gigabyte" logo does not popup and we cant get into the bios,

tried diff pcie slot cant try a different computer he only has this one. We can get into windows everything else works it just wont boot with the gtx 970. Ive tried looking for soulutions ive tried everything i could think of/find online.

Is there maybe a bios setting or something that could be making this happen at all? im out of ideas.

With the gpu removed, make sure in the BIOS you don't have the iGPU as the only one enabled ( I can't remember where that setting is or if Gigabyte boards have it haha) Make sure the contacts on the card and the motherboard don't have any dust on them, connect the power to the GPU, if it doesn't post try the GPU in another rig (Your own?) If it doesn't work. Well bad news, its a dud.

tried hdmi dp and dvi-d to dvi-d

Well we've just elimintaed all issues regarding cables/ports problem.

So I'm guessing the GPU's fans are turning on when you boot? Does your mobo beeps loudly? Some kind of error code when booting with the GPU before the screen turns black?

Yeah I had to gon and sleep. From my understanding of things if you get a post when you plug the screen into the mobo's OI ports the only possibility left is that you've got a DOA card.

Does the fans turn on when you power up? Have you stried switching the cable to the GPU from the sockets you inserted them in the PSU (change rails)

So the fans turn on but no display...hummm. to behonnest I can think of two outcome here

1) You've got a DOA card or some issue with the card's port itself

2) You've got a monitor that for some reason cannot handle a GPU.

Do you happen to have some other build which you can run the monitor on? As such you eliminate another problem from the list of possible issues.

my friend tried the monitor on his laptop and it worked, im thinking DOA and this point too no matter what we do it refuses to start with the gpu

I guess shit like this does happen on consoles as well, you just don't have to check for the problem yourself. Just return the console to the retailer and they are able to get you a new one right away.
