I know quite a lot about receivers. But Sony, Is Sony even up to par to brands like Denon, Onyko and Pioneer?

I'm deciding between these two receivers.

SONY STR-DN860

and

DENON AVR-510BT

So basically I have the ability to get either one for basically the same price. Is Sony up to par now a days?

This an interesting comparison.

The Denon is the clear choice because it has 3 HDCP 2.2 inputs, but those spring connectors would make me consider an alternate option.

Denon without even looking at them, Sony has come a long way, but Denon and Onkyo are my top 2, Pioneer has been slipping as of late from what I hear. A local mom and pop retailer around here ditched Pioneer altogether because of warranty and customer support problems.

Onkyo had a rough patch with HDMI boards, and I believe they ditched Audyessy for an in house solution. They are still best bang for your buck IMO

I can get the Sony for $279.99 right now. Thats why I was considering it. The Denon had those spring connectors that you mentioned which made me question it.

I personally like Pioneer. But it's time for an upgrade. Mine is almost 20 years old and it sounds better than 98% of receivers in today's market. It was 5.1 and was fully loaded with everything. The Sony one is normally like $499.99 but Best Buy is selling em for $279.99 brand new. It has way more features on it. But I personally know Denon is better but all it has is Bluetooth while the Sony basically has everything from Google Cast to Ethernet/WiFi

I find in general I tend not use use the what I call "marketing features" of receivers. I find them rushed and unpolished, where an actual chrome cast or device designed for streaming hooked the the receiver ends up being more versatile and polished. For someone how doesn't want to buy another device the "marketing features" do get the job done.

Personally I prefer the receiver to provide the sound quality and I'll supply the input device.

If you have a high quality receiver, a Sony with an MSRP of $500 and reduced pricing for $280 is not going to be much of an upgrade in terms of quality. Sure the 860 has modern features, but I would argue that its quality is just not going to be there compared to other modern receivers.

To be honest you might not even notice an audible difference between these two Sony and Denon receivers. It's ultimately your decision, but I live by a faithful saying: friends don't let friends buy Sony.
