I'll list the events in order:

1. Boot up computer

2. starting windows, everything's normal, primary monitor IS working

3. primary monitor goes black (sadness)

4. I unplug primary monitor, then 2nd monitor turns on.

5. plug primary back in, both go black

note, when i unplug the primary monitor, i can operate fine on the second monitor, like windows isn't recognizing the primary monitors existence AFTER boot.

absolutely no idea what is causing this. any ideas?

What are your monitors plugged into (motherboard, video card, both?) what connections are you using (DVI, VGA, HDMI, DisplayPort)? what version of windows are you running? Need more details.

Remove the HDMI splitter and plug directly into the card. See if that makes a difference. Also, check with your card specs that it can do DVI and HDMI at the same time. You might have to run both as DVI or both as HDMI?

The second monitor is working fine, it's the Primary that cant seem to work properly, and i've had this setup for months now without a hiccup

How many monitors total?

Primary is DVI or HDMI?

Secondary is DVI or HDMI?

What else is connected to the splitter and connected to the video card?

If it has been working in the past what has changed.

Two total.

Primary is Dvi.

Secondary is HDMI.

Primary monitor                                     secondary monitor

               |-----DVI---------- [PC]--------HDMI------|Splitter|-------HDMI-------[PlayStation]

Nothing has changed, that i am aware of

We currently don't know where the problem exists and need to eliminate as many factors as possible. From what you have described the issue is either related to the primary monitor...or the DVI connector.

Lets see if the problem is with the DVI Output on the card. Connect the Secondary Monitor to the DVI port (disconnect the primary completely)...if it works then connect only the Primary monitor to DVI and test....if both monitors are able to work fine in isolation with DVI we have confirmed that the card is not a problem.

If the Primary doesn't work on DVI but the Secondary does...plug the primary into VGA and test again...if the monitor works then it is likely that the DVI input connection on the monitor itself has gone bad.

Try these tests to see if we can eliminate the DVI as being the problem first.

If you don't mind, i'm really quite tired, so I shall do that tomorrow. It's midnight where i am at the moment.

No problem....time zones can be an issue.

The last thing I forgot to mention with the above test. If they both fail on DVI, it may not be the DVI on the card that is bad, but the cable could also be the problem. Only way to confirm that if both monitors fail on DVI is to change the cable. If they still fail with a known good cable then it's the card. If they don't work with the old cable or the new cable it's the card.

After you test report back and let me know and I'll see if there is anything else we can test to try to figure out the problem. Due to time zones it may take me a bit of time to get back to you.. :)

No matter what i try it seems it can only run one monitor at a time, the secondary one; if i try to connect both, both go black, if i disconnect the secondary then the primary stays black, with every video cable I have on hand.

primary has a DVI and a VGA port

Secondary has VGA/DVI and HDMI

i tried secondary with DVI and it still worked, Primary with  VGA and is still not working properly

Im starting to wonder if this is windows' fault, maybe not knowing what to do.
