SSD Paranoia

Go to solution Solved by Thx And Bye,

1. Don't ever clone a HDD image to an SSD, there are some Windows settings that optimise performance for SSD that are set automatically during installation. I know it's convenient, but don't do it.

2. The less free space you have, the less performance you have, since there are less free cells that can be used. Always keep about 20%-15% free of you SSD. This way you will also have a longer live span, since you don't have a minority of cells, that have to handle all the writes.

3. Use Anvil's Storage Utilities for benchmarking

4. Don't let you influence by pure benchmark values alone too much, most of the time they don't matter for real world anyways.

-Just got a samsung evo 850 500gb ssd

-IOPS pretty low when ran with crystal disk mark and samsung magician software (rapid mode off and performace set to max)

60k read 20k write iops

sequential speed both 500+ (No problem with it)

disk usage is 400gb/500gb (I cloned it)

-Using SATA 3

-z97 compatible mobo

-Checked task manager, no resource hogs. Updates off, AV off and other background software's closed

Am i right to assume sine i am using up most of the space in the ssd thus, the iops would drop since the "block" size in the flash memory is larger and more "cluttered". On the other side, if i were to run my ssd with a clean os and no other application/documents, i would acheive the advertised iops rating (98k write and 90k read)

Thanks

The performance could also be hindered by the fact that you cloned it rather than doing a clean/fresh install of everything. (I have no idea how the IOPS would realistically be affected by used space.)

I agree with @Thx And Bye , you shouldn't clone a HDD to SSD if you don't need to.

You should also save space, for 512GB you're looking at 102GB at the top end. It has been like this for as long as I can remember so you should be doing the same thing with HDD's. SSD's do use TRIM but you have to give that time to work as it's not on constantly. However if you're using the cells before TRIM can do its thing then you're going to run into problems.

It's not a race to the bottom.

Actually, I did exactly this, and Windows 10 correctly engaged TRIM and everything else once it booted on the SSD. :P

Things gone well after if reformat the ssd and reinstall windows. Both iops shot up and everything was stable and speed went up to as advertised except the write iops which is probably due to my os hogging up (test was done withh 70/500gb usd and some software loaded) What you guys said was really right. I am sure it was 100% caused by cloning of the disk. Thank you for your time guys!
