There is a software called F.lux that dims your screen and reduces the amount of blue light displayed on your screen at night to make it less harmful for your eyes. Blue light at night is bad for your eyes, so this software is something I personally have and it works great. Since there's less blue light displayed, there is an orange tint to the screen, so doing color accurate work with this program running isn't a good idea, but you can turn it off temporarily. Don't worry, you get used to the orange tint after like 10 mins. There's an Android app that does the same thing called Twilight.

You mean f.lux?

It doesn't actually affect brightness. It changes color temperature to fit day/night

If you want actual control over brightness and temperature, there is SunsetScreen

There is no way to have your monitor adjust brightness to its surroundings. It needs to have a built-in light sensor do do that.

Yea, I didn't mean to say "dim", but oh well
