How does Massdrop work?

So a friend told me about massdrop, it sounds like a pretty cool idea, they buy items in bulk and get it cheaper and give that discount to the buyers, but what i want to know is say it i brought something would I have to wait for 20-30 others to buy that item before they shipped that item to me so they can actually buy that item in bulk? OR once you've paid for the item does it start shipping right away?

I believe that you buy the item, there is a timer on the item like a week and after the week is up whatever the final price is on the item, that is how much you have to pay and than it will ship.
