windows xp only displaying mouse cursor

so my niebough asked me to help her out with her pc since it wasnt working properly. its on windows xp and when it boots up you get the windows loading bar then it shows the windows logo and then proceeds to say welcome and after this is done loading the screen goes black and only the mouse. i can open things like task manager and cmd but the desktop doesnt show up nor do any of the icons and niether does the task bar. can anyone help me with this please

try and get it to an "windows didn't shut down correctly" and see if you can access safe mode, once your there just screw around and see what you can do.

i can get into safe mode and get on the internet but the person doesnt like using safe mode ad wants it to run normally with the desk top and stuff dsiplaying

hm.. I had that happen to my computer once too, don't remember how I fixed it... see if you can get to the system repair.

Click OK

 

Backup data & reinstall windows.

 

 

ive tried to run explorer.exe before and it does nothing
