I'm terribly sorry if this is posted in the wrong section.

I have recently built a new pc, it is the first one I have ever constructed and it has be running for nearly a month flawlessly except the odd software error. I recently set the pc to copy a load of movies and noticed after about half an hour that the fans stepped up there RPM to their maximum. At first I was not to bothered but after about 5 minutes of the fans being at full speed the entire PC tried to shut down. I cancelled the shut down and opened ASUS AI suit to look at the temperature. The CPU temperature had spiked to 85 degrees (the fans had been going full speed a little while now).I cancelled all applications and shut the PC for about 2 minutes then powered it on and the fans started on full speed but CPU temperature was 36 Celsius. I restarted the procedure of copying my movies straight after and could not get the CPU temperature above 40.

The long and short of it is, why did the CPU temperature exceed its normal temperature under stress by 30 Celsius on such a low load task and why can I not create the problem ? If it helps with the diagnoses I had just moved my PC to a different part of the house but i did not knock it.

Thank you and kind regards
                                            Steven.

Since this is the first PC you ever constructed i have a few questions for you and you may feel that i maybe insulting you but that is not the case.

1) Was there TIM on the stock cooler before you installed it?

2) Is the cooler properly locked in place

3) Were you running any other programs while coping the files?

4) Did you get any BSODs before this happened?

5) Did you get any BSODs after this has happened?

6) when you did your restart after cancelling the automatic shut down was there a windows message regarding a error and did you read it, if any, that caused the automatic shut down?

7) Have you overclocked your CPU?

8) Have you entered the UEFI to see if your settings are how they were before this problem occurred?

9) Have you cleared your CMOS since this has happened?

Also, please give your PCs UEFI specifications for better referencing, e.g CPU type, voltage etc.

Thank you for the reply, and not at all i appreciate the help.

1) There was the standard thermal paste pre applied.
2) I have checked the cooler just to be sure and it is locked in place properly
3) The only other program that was running was chrome (ironically looking for a new cooler)
4) The system has never blue screened on me.
5) There was no blue screen during the whole temperature spike
6) I restarted the system about 2 minutes after I notice the temperature, that was about 4 maybe 5 minutes after the automated shut down. There was no error screen of any sort and one has never popped up since the system has been running.
7) The CPU is at its stock settings.
8) The UEFI seems to be the same as it was before the temperature spike.
9) I have not cleared my CMOS, do you think this would be a worthwhile thing to do ?

The processor is an Intel i7 4770k @ 3.5 GHZ and 1.008 volts on a TUF series sabourtooth mother board

9) I have not cleared my CMOS, do you think this would be a worthwhile thing to do ?

Clearing the CMOS clears any "errors" stored in the configuration data of the CMOS that is created during BSODs and improper UEFI configurations but you haven't had this so i don't think you would benefit but it wouldn't hurt to try. While i am not at your system i cannot be 100% sure but i feel that the cause of the temperature spike/s would be an increase voltage, from the CPU not being cooled properly or if a program was running in the background like say a system virus scan. What i do not understand is why was it automatically shutting down as 85C is still with in the "safe zone". You are running your CPU at stock with 1.008v and if that is your load temperature the stock cooler should be more than enough to cool the CPU. I would advise you to run AI Suite III monitor or some other system monitoring software to monitor your system to get an idea of where the problem is coming from if this reoccurs. I hope you get this sorted out.

Thank you for the detailed and swift response. I have taken your advise and downloaded AI suit and real temp to cross reference temperatures. I have also ordered a more suitable cooler (Swiftech H220) and I will post again if I find a definitive answer to why it occurred and if it occurs again.

Before I mark this as 'solved' I would just like to thank you for your help as this "Newbie"  is very grateful.

Kind regards
